Marina And The Diamonds – I Am Not A Robot lyrics

You've been acting awful tough lately
Smoking a lot of cigarettes lately
But inside, you're just a little baby
It's okay to say you've got a weak spot
You don't always have to be on top
Better to be hated than love, love, loved for what you're not

You're vulnerable, you're vulnerable
You are not a robot
You're loveable, so loveable
But you're just troubled

Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot

You've been hanging with the unloved kids
Who you never really liked and you never trusted
But you are so magnetic, you pick up all the pins

Never committing to anything
You don't pick up the phone when it ring, ring, rings
Don't be so pathetic, just open up and sing

I'm vulnerable, I'm vulnerable
I am not a robot
You're loveable, so loveable
But you're just troubled

Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot

Can you teach me how to feel real?
Can you turn my power on?
Well, let the drum beat drop

Guess what? I'm not a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot

Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot

A robot is a program; a predetermined series of actions to be taken, if x then Y. By definition a program is not spontaneous and therefore not of the moment. So not real (not realtime). The words are saying it is okay to open. To share what is in the moment. What you actually feel. To get outside the program. The group think. A very tight place among those that are very vulnerable. Often the tough crowd. Bad boys. The armor needed to protect. You don't need to be a robot. What would you loose being real. Would you drop dead? Probably not. Learn this while you are young, others will step back out of fear but later respect you. Don't be a robot.

I believe that when marina wrote this song, the meaning she wanted to portray was that no-one is perfect (like a robot) and that people should stop worrying about what they missed out on, or the qualities they lack but be grateful for their gifts and work on those to become the best they can be. We can tell this from the lyrics 'better to be hated than love, love, loved for what you're not'. I also believe that the lyrics 'guess what, I'm not a robot' goes to show that she is proud of who she is and does not want to be perfect or be something that she is not. The comes accross in her personality as well because she is strong willed and does not want to be told by anyone who she is, or what she should be. Taking all of these things into account I think that the song is anout beign truthful and about expressing your feelings and enjoying being who you are and being with your loved ones rather than trying to fit in with the crowd and impress those who you don't know or don't even like!

The personality trait of perfectionism can be useful in the short-term pursuit of our dreams but in the long term it can lead to stress, burnout, and chronic fatigue. Aim for "good enough" and "well-being"instead.
Lack of self esteem and assertiveness may lead us to have unhelpful thoughts that we are "unlovable" and/or are unable to say "no".
We have the right simply to be ourselves without having to act for other people's benefit; we have the right to make mistakes and feel comfortable about admitting to them (powell t 2000).

I take it to mean that yeah, she's telling either him or herself to stop acting mechanically, controlled or under the influence of others. He/she isn't thinking for His/herself, and is just performing the actions expected of them.
She also means, I think, that he/she is not a machine, has feelings, and he/she isn't, as Sarcasm said, perfect. He/she has flaws because he/she is human, but is lovable and needs someone to help look out for them.
