Major Lazer – Lean On lyrics

[Verse 1: MØ]
Do you recall, not long ago
We would walk on the sidewalk?
Innocent, remember?
All we did was care for each other

[Pre-Chorus 1: MØ]
But the night was warm
We were bold and young
All around, the wind blows
We would only hold on to let go

[Chorus: MØ]
Blow a kiss, fire a gun
We need someone to lean on
Blow a kiss, fire a gun
All we need is somebody to lean on
Blow a kiss, fire a gun
We need someone to lean on
Blow a kiss, fire a gun
All we need is somebody to lean on

[Verse 2: MØ]
What will we do when we get old?
Will we walk down the same road?
Will you be there by my side?
Standing strong as the waves roll over

[Pre-Chorus 2: MØ]
But the nights are long
Longing for you to come home
All around the wind blows
We would only hold on to let go

[Chorus: MØ]

[Bridge: MØ]
All we need is somebody to lean on
(We need someone to lean on)
All we need is somebody to lean on
Lean on, lean on, lean on, lean on...
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey...

[Chorus: MØ]

When you read the written out lyrics to the song it makes a lot more sense. It's a man talking to a woman that he cares for in the first part and then in the second half of the song, after the first "bad girl" chorus, the same woman who is no longer with him, possibly not by choice. She' either left unwillingly or she's in jail. The two extremes, repeated over and over, "blow a kiss, fire a gun" are clues to both his feelings for her and what's going on with her.

I've heard some remixes of this where there's a whole lot more going on than the base song. That's probably what you've heard. The base song is pretty simple.

At the age of 62, I listen to the song, thinking of having a wonderful life together with my wife, full of love and fights (typical marriage?) and then at the end she dies and leaves me. The beauty and loss is devastating. The joy and sadness. Much like the kiss of happiness and the gun (cancer) which so suddenly takes her away.
