Madonna – Material Girl lyrics

Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they're O. K.
If they don't give me proper credit
I just walk away

They can beg and they can plead
But they can't see the light, that's right
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right, 'cause we are

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Some boys romance, some boys slow dance
That's all right with me
If they can't raise my interest then I
Have to let them be

Some boys try and some boys lie but
I don't let them play
Only boys who save their pennies
Make my rainy day, 'cause they are

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world

Boys may come and boys may go
And that's all right you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they're after me, 'cause everybody's

A material, a material, a material, a material world

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
[repeat and fade]

I heard this song this morning and for the first time listened to the lyrics. They are the words of a girl who has enough sense to respect herself and wants true love. She leaves the boys who are not willing to show evidence that they love her. We are material - flesh and blood, and we live in a material world. All words and no material really translates into disrespect. She only asks for pennies, the most that boys can offer. Fast forward to my present, where boys have been replaced by men. Men will provide material but only when they love or at least believe we are worth it. Material is the evidence that a man is not mentally ill or has other serious issues. A woman who does not understand this gets used even to the point of being a sugar momma. You can't pay bills with psychic money/material. Material girl means smart girl who will only settle for true love.

The song is one of the most ironic takes on 80's consumerism. Madonna takes on the role of a girl whose only interest - or obsession - are her material possessions. It is also tongue in cheek, with lines like "if they can't raise my interest" and "boys may come" full of sexual innuendo. To some extent, there are also feminist undertones, since the girl in question seems to be much smarter than all the boys who chase her. Unfortunately, the song's irony was completely misunderstood in America, where Madonna is known as the "material girl" up to this day, as if the song represented her life philosophy.

I love this soo awesome! The girl is just saying she needs to find the perfect boy not just the one that's okay. Maybe she just wants a boy with money. I can really connect to the girl because I ignore half the boys but certain ones are always "mr. Right". (-; you can really tell she only wants the money. She's obviously gorgeous because boys chase and want her: x
