Those schoolgirl days
Of telling tales, and biting nails, are gone
But in my mind,
I know they will still live on and on
But how do you thank someone
Who has taken you from crayons to perfume?
It isn't easy, but I'll try
If you wanted the sky,
I would write across the sky in letters,
That would soar a thousand feet high:
"To Sir, With Love"
The time has come
For closing books; and long last looks must end
And as I leave,
I know that I am leaving my best friend
A friend who taught me right from wrong,
And weak from strong -- that's a lot to learn
What -- what can I give you in return?
If you wanted the moon,
I would try to make a start . . . but I
Would rather you let me give my heart

I just noticed that i had a few typos in my post. I did use capital letters "i" and "usa" and i meant to add gave "up" about the higher paying job, but when i did the post, a lot of the letters didn't stay capitalized. I also used a capital "s" in "sir" and i mispelled "illiterate" my wireless keyboard doesn't always type the letters if i don't hit certain keys hard enough. I also did use capital letters here, but don't know if they will show up that way until i post this.

I first heard the song when it was released in the usa on a 45 rpm record, which by the way i still have in my possession. I was only 9 at the time and hadn't seen the movie yet.
I can't remember what year i finally did see the movie. After seeing the movie i understood what the song was about. "sir" was given the opportunity to teach troubled teenagers who were ilitterate and didn't get a lot of support from their parents or in the case of denham, no adult supervision and they basically did whatever they wanted when they weren't at home.
When they were at home they did as they were told and if they didn't they got beaten by their father. Most of the girls had to basically take care of the housekeeping and their siblings.
The previous teacher couldn't care less about them and because of how they treated him he commited suicide. When "sir" came into the picture, the students tried their best to break him but couldn't. He also realized that conventional teaching methods wouldn't work because most of them couldn't read and didn't even want him there.
"sir" got to them by treating them as equals and got to them on their level.
He taught them by showing them actual things they would have to deal with when they finished school and were out in the real world. He taught them how to respect one another and their elders. What life was really all about and that they could make something of themselves if they wanted to.
The biggest change was with denham but in all of them really. I get emotional just hearing the song and then of course watching the movie even more. Also the extra lyrics during the movie that weren't on the official 45 release had a lot to say in them.
"sir" even learned a few things himself and gave a a much higher paying salary because he was able to finally reach the students and even "weston" changed towards the students.
The song thanks "sir" with true and very sincere words. In just a short time, they grew to love him and respect him. They thanked him in such a way that he was speechless. The lyrics say it all.
If we had teachers like this today, maybe our own children would turn out better and want to make something of their lives. But today, they rebel even more than we did, and there isn't really anything you can do to them.
If you spank them you could go to jail for child abuse. And the kids all know this so they use it to manipulate their parents and know all the tricks there are. Especially with cellphones and texting, they can communicate with each other without their parents knowing what they are talking about and can come up with new ways to beat the system.
I wish we had a teacher like "sir" when we were in school. Not that we had a lot of troublemakers, but there were a few here and there.

She had a mentor who helped her grow and learn from childhood to womanhood. And now that she's grown she wants to show her appreciation and love to the mentor in question

My first wife sent me this song. We were very young when we got married, and we lived together for just 6 years growing up and learning to love together. It ended horribly and we lost touch for 32 years. We found each other on zfacebook and we discovered the truths of what broke us apart. We were young and dumb and we cheated each other out of a wonderful love that waited 32 years to reignite. She's married, has been for 24 years to a great guy. Time has past,we know we loved each other than and feel so much love still, but it is impossible. Thank you for the idea of this song my darling once-upon-a-time.

This song is about thanking a man (teacher specifically) who has made a huge impact on your life or made you a better person. I believe it's a beautiful song about appreciating the people in one's life.
