Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
Hey honey
Take a walk on the wild side

Candy came from out on the Island
In the backroom she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head

She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
I Said, Hey baby
Take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go
Doo do doo do doo do do doo..

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City's the place where they say,
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, Hey Joe
Take a walk on the wild side

Sugar Plum Fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo
You should've seen em go go go
They said, Hey shuga Take a walk on the wild side
I Said, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
All right, huh

Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that bash
Said, Hey babe,
Take a walk on the wild side
I said, Hey honey,
Take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls say,
Doo do doo do doo do do doo

Ye gods. I pause and wonder. I'm straight. That's not extolling the virtues of heterosexuality over anyone else's life choice, it just is. I consider at my age I've had ample opportunity to work it out and discover if life intended me to be any other way. I'm just not, despite a single wavering in the opposite direction when I did have cause to wonder (nobody is 100% anything, but I think my hetero-ness is in the middle-to-high 90% region). And yes, I have sampled assorted recreational chemicals, but never to this extent and not for a few years now. It just consternates me how I've got to know so much useless trivia about the New York gay scene of the late 1960's - early 1970's. I mean, I've never yet been there. Home is Great Britain. Maybe, because Transformer is a life-long favourite LP that gets into my personal top ten, it all sank in by osmosis or telepathy with the mind of Lou Reed. . Either that, or I have an unusually retentive brain for the bizarre and the abnormal. as for the follow-up laugh-fest LP "Berlin" - while I do know and love the city, i am not even going NEAR that one. Not yet, anyway.
