Laura Nyro – Eli's Coming lyrics
Eli's comin'. Eli's comin' (Eli's a-comin'). Well, you better hide your heart, your loving heart.
Eli's a-comin' and the cards say a broken heart, a broken heart
.

Eli's comin', hide your heart, girl, Eli's comin', hide your heart, girl.
Girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide, girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide.
Girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide, girl, Eli's comin', hide your heart, girl.
You better, better hide your heart, Eli's comin', better walk.
Walk but you'll never get away, no, you'll never get away from the burning a-heartache.
I walked to Apollo by the bay, everywhere I go though,
Eli's a-comin' (she walked but she never got away).
Eli's a-comin' (she walked but she never got away).
Eli's a-comin' and he's comin' to get ya (she walked but, she walked but)
Get down on your knees (she walked but she never got away), Eli's comin',

(Hide it, hide it, hide it) Girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide, girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide. Girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide, girl, Eli's comin', hide your heart, girl (hide it).
You better, better hide your heart Eli's comin', better walk.
Walk but you'll never get away, no, you'll never get away from the burning a-heartache.
I walked to Apollo by the bay, everywhere I go though,
Eli's a-comin' (she walked but she'll never get away).
Eli's a-comin' (she walked but she'll never get away).
Eli's a-comin' and he's comin' to get ya (she walked but, she walked but).
Get down on your knees (she walked but she'll never get away). Get down on your knees.
No, no, no, no Lord, I said no, no, no, no, no, no (hide it).
She can (hide it) hide it, (hide it). You better (hide it). Somebody (hide it). You got to (hide it)
.

Eli's comin'. Eli's comin' (Eli's a-comin'). Well, you better hide your heart, your loving heart.
Eli's comin', better hide your heart, girl. Eli's comin', better hide your heart, girl.
Eli's comin', better hide your heart, girl. Eli's comin', better hide your heart, girl...

To "unregistered mar 13th 2012"and "jul 3rd 2012". Good night! That's a bit of a stretch, the whole biblical references are hilarious attempts to make pictures out of clouds in the sky. I actually know ms. Nyro and I promise she was not making any reference to the biblical elijah, except that the name has a nice sound to it -- good lyrics. As a russian jew I doubt any christian theology plays, or has ever played, a part in her life. I don't know if the postings below come from a jewish or christian belief system, though they're connected of course. Laura is a real renaissance woman. She's open to most anything. She's a great artist first and always. Her songs from this period were, for the most part, simply love songs. "a no good man by the name of eli is coming and he's a heartbreaker" has it about right.

Like many others, I grew up familiar only with the popular, somewhat hectic 3Dog Night version. I must say that I found the Lisa Germano cover from Time and Love a brilliant interpretation. Here, the lyric strikes me as an inner dialogue of a spurned, obsessed, and perhaps menacing lover.

Ms Nyro actually sings..." I walked to the corners of the square...and everywhere I go".

    Plus..."I'm down on my knees...".

And..."you'll never get away from the burn and the heartache."

This is my most cherished song written by Laura Nyro. Her interpretation is essential to hearing her lyrical plea.

Eli's Coming was written about a man named Eli Koton. During the 60's Koton and Ms. Nyro had a relationship that she writes about. Koton, a serial dating man in those days "Stole Your Heart" and seemingly "Stole" Ms. Nyro's heart as well. As the years after the song's release along with Popularity from the Three Dog Night's version, Koton never looked to reveal the identity nor did Ms.Nyro. I believe Eli Koton is still alive in 2020.

I just saw that my musings were already discussed, so mine is a bit redundant after all. Oh well. We all have our own imaginations that can lead to similar ideas at times. Being a Jew and a writer, my imagination sometimes picks up on familiar themes that I wonder about and that relate to my own conscious and unconscious feelings and beliefs.

Consciously or unconsciously, could Eli's coming also refer to the return of Elijah signaling mashiach (the anointed one) is coming? She does make other references such as "down on her knees". The mashiach is defined as a man, a leader who will bring the Jews to peace but will also punish all those who have harmed the jews in the past. Some believe that all Jews will be brought back to life at that time to live together in peace and prosperities. There are a lot of references to Elijah in other songs and celebrations, such as on Pesach when an extra glass for wine is put on the table for Elijah in case he should come at that time to partake and to signal the end to suffering and peace evermore.

Many writers of prose and poetry transfer more than what they realize into their works, which is unavoidable really since we can't communicate at all without bringing ourselves in somehow. So, there are often possible unconscious meanings.

As "Unregistered" said, there is nothing hidden in here. It is a song about a charming womanizer who is comin' to get her (original lyrics "and he's coming to get me mamma"). And Apollo by the bay is basically the same as "down at the corner of the square" (again, from the original lyrics) I. E. No matter where she walks Eli is going to get her.

A drugged up man looking for love is coming to get you. He will have s** with you and leave you for the next. Thnks, unregistered on feb 6th. That is what it sounded like to me back in 7th or 8th grade. But now as an adult I think that it is possible that when laura was inspired to write this song she was thinking elijah is coming to get you. The jesus freak pushers were out full force at the end of the 60's plus the horrible guilt she must have felt being a closet? Lesbian made her write this song. To appeal to a wider audience and to not be seen as promoting some primative religion she changed to eli instead of elijah. Just my opinion.

So the original lyric did not have ‘Apollo by the bay?’ I always thought that was the name of a club or something. Whatever that phrase is or means it is a great tune and it works well in multiple versions unlike some other songs. Unregistered, you are lucky to know her. Thank you.
