Lady GaGa – Hair lyrics

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, oh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, woah

Whenever I'm dressed cool
My parents put up a fight (Uh huh uh huh)
And if I'm hot shot
Mom will cut my hair at night (Uh huh uh huh)

And in the morning
I'm short of my identity (Uh huh uh huh)
I scream mom and dad
Why can't I be who I wanna be? (Uh huh uh huh)
To be

I just wanna be myself and I want you to love
Me for who I am
I just wanna be myself and I want you to know
I am my hair

I've had enough
This is my prayer
That I'll die livin' just as free as my hair
I've had enough
This is my prayer
That I'll die livin' just as free as my hair
I've had enough
I'm not a freak
I just keep fightin' to stay cool on these streets
I've had enough, enough, enough
And this is my prayer
I swear
I'm as free as my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I'm as free as my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I am my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I am my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh

Free as my hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are
Hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are hair
Free as my hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are
Hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are hai-ai-ai-ai-are

Sometimes I want some raccoon
Or red highlights (Uh huh uh huh)
Just because I want my friends
To think I'm dynamite (Uh huh uh huh)

And on Friday rock city
High school dance (Uh huh uh huh)
I've got my bangs to hide that
I don't stand a chance (Uh huh uh huh)
A chance

I just wanna be myself and I want you to love
Me for who I am
I just wanna be myself and I want you to know
I am my hair

I've had enough
This is my prayer
That I'll die livin' just as free as my hair
I've had enough
This is my prayer
That I'll die livin' just as free as my hair
I've had enough
I'm not a freak
I just keep fightin' to stay cool on these streets
I've had enough, enough, enough
And this is my prayer
I swear
I'm as free as my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I'm as free as my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I am my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I am my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh

Free as my hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are
Hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are hair
Free as my hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are
Hai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-are hai-ai-ai-ai-are

I just want to be free
I just want to be me
And I want lots of friends that invite me to their parties
Don't want to change
And I don't want to be ashamed
I'm the spirit of my hair
It's all the glory that I bear

I'm my hair, I am my hair
I'm my hair, I am my hair
I am my hair, I am my hair
I am my hair (It’s all the glory that I bear)

I'm my hair, I am my hair
It's all the glory that I bear
I'm my hair, I am my hair
I’m my hair, yeah, yeah
(It's all the glory that I bear)
I’m my hair, yeah, yeah
(It's all the glory that I bear)
I’m my hair, yeah, yeah
(It's all the glory that I bear)
I’m my hair, yeah, yeah, yeah

I've had enough
This is my prayer
That I'll die livin' just as free as my hair
I've had enough
This is my prayer
That I'll die livin' just as free as my hair
I've had enough
I'm not a freak
I just keep fightin' to stay cool on these streets
I've had enough, enough, enough (enough and)
And this is my prayer (this is my prayer)
I swear
I’m as free as my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I'm as free as my hair (this is my prayer)
I am my hair
Oh oh-oh
Oh oh-oh
I am my hair
Ooh, I'm my hair, I'm my hair

Hair song is about the difficulties of growing up when not wanting to conform to the values of normal society. Perhaps autobiographical, the song features a main character who "can't be who they wanna be" because "whenever they're dressed cool", they get into trouble with their parents. The character's multi-colored hair, which is the expression of their rebellion and non-conformity, gets cut off at night by their mom. However, in spite of this, the song is optimistic and the character states in the chorus "this is my prayer, I swear, I'm as free as my hair, I am my hair". Even though the character's hair can be cut, it will always grow back again. The hair in the song represents the character's true feelings and is reflected in the lyrics; "I just wanna be myself and I want you to love me for who I am". In this sense, Hair seems to be about accepting people for who they are, regardless of how they choose to dress or express themselves. I am unsure whether or not the hair cutting incident comes from Lady Gaga's own childhood, although the song's lyrics are similar to her other optimistic tracks about non-conformity such as Born This Way.

Hair means everything to me, sometimes, you know you can't go on with your own personal life without your parents trying to influence you to be that better person, but really you want to be who you want to be. It's even worse to be a homosexual being in an homophobic household because they honestly believe they can change you but the point is, that we should have our freedom of expression and. I will. Die living. As free. As my hair.

It's about not judging people for being different and having the courage of self expression. I actually heard this for the first time at the iheart radio music festival Saturday and was really moved - so much so that I sought these lyrics out. She sang the song as a tribute to a little monster who killed himself just this past week and the emotion was so raw I couldn't help but be drawn to the song. Incredible performance by a talented artist who hasn't been swallowed up by the ugly money machine. I'm in awe of her. By far the best performance of the festival. You rock as an artist and a compassionate human being Lady Gaga.
