I think I saw you in my sleep, darling,
I think I saw you in my dreams you were
Stitching up the seams on every broken promise
That your body couldn't keep.
I think I saw you in my sleep.

I think I saw you in my sleep, darling,
I think I saw you in my dreams you were
Stitching up the seams on every broken promise
That your body couldn't keep.
I think I saw you in my sleep.

I thought I heard the door open, oh no,
Thought I heard the door open but
I only heard it close.

I thought I heard a plane crashing, but
Now I think it was your passion snapping.

I think you saw me confronting my fear, it
Went up with a bottle and went down with the beer and
I think you ought to stay away from here
There are ghosts in the walls and they
Crawl in your head through your ear
.

I think I saw you in my sleep, lover,
I think I saw you in my dreams you were
Stitching up the seams on every mangled promise
That your body couldn't keep.
I think I saw you in my sleep.

I know that someday you'll be sleeping, darling,
Likely dreaming off the pain.
I hope you'll hear me in the street lights, humming,
Softly breathing out your name

I know that even with the seams stitched, darling,
Scars will remain.
I say we scrape them from each other, darling,
And let them wash off in the rain
And when they run into the river, oh no,
Let the water not complain

I swear that even with the distance, slowly,
Wearing out your name
Your hands still catch the light the right way
And our hearts still beats the same.
And our hearts still beat the same.

I think he's drunk and he's saying that she can't keep promises to save him (could be saving from anything, alcoholism, himself etc) so he made her leave. He dreams about her constantly and the scars of their relationship show through on them, even though he wishes should would come back so they could wash them away. With the distance wearing out her name he's starting to forget her but he realizes through her hands that she's still the same girl he sent away and they both want the same things still.

In my opinion the song talks about a failed relationship where the singer keeps thinking about the other person, hoping she will come back and help him mend him. Where his partner left him at his worst, trying to soothe down the demons of his head he kept drinking, and instead of trying to find a way to help him she got tired and left him. He kept drinking in order to soothe his pain, and she couldent understand. She thought he was crazy amd she wanted to leave him. He keeps hoping she would come back and help him.
