I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

So if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

[break]

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
So why don't we go

This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know

Complex things are just around the bend. If you choose to make your life a complicated one, then it is your choice but remember that simple things are just lurking in places you'll never would have expected.
Simple things are now far from our reach; it's a sad thing.
Just like everone else, we need to be with simple things in order to have satisfaction. And I mean true satisfaction.
As my friend put it, we are all longing to be back to where life is just simple.

For me, this song is talking about how he lost the love of his life, yet they still have these complex feelings and he's desperately trying to understand where those feelings have gone, and why they aren't together. He's trying to get her to understand that he needs her and loves her and to go back to the magical love they had. Because love is simple, but when you break up everything gets complex and hard, especially when you know they're the one.

This song sounds to me like it's talking about someone reminiscing, thinking of all the times he spent in that special place, and about all the simple things that were once in his life, in childhood, but are gone now, to be replaced by more complex things. It's the place he loved and dreamed about, a place where he is escaping to now, to get away from the complexities, and go back to where it is simple. This song reminds me of some bittersweet memories.

I am 37 and grew up early, to get away from abuse suffered, sexually, mentally and physically behind closed doors. I got married at 16, quit school, first child at 19, addicted for years, to escape. 1997 met my husband and everything changed for me and my son(stephen)me and stephen got closer as he got older, we grew up together, he taught me I do deserve respect and not to be treated certain ways, to love myself. Stephen was always diff then other teen boys, he took a bible to school everyday, cried for lost and set the example of what a real christian is, non judgmental. Stephen helped me with faith and insecurities, from my past. We joked and laughed, we wud lay in the bed at night and watch T. V and talk, I could tell him all my secrets and knew, it wud not change his love for me. I was and still am very protective of stephen and austin, because at a young age I saw the bad in life. I just started letting stephen go to the canal with his friend. May 30, 2009 he asked to go, my husband said no and I said he could, cause he really wanted too and I would talk with his father. Stephen drowned, he was16. This song I never heard until the winnie the pooh movie review last year and I tried all this time to find it, 2 listen to the whole song, I knew it reminded me of him, I felt it, but now I know it does. I have listened so many times already and cried. I feel just like that. Where have you gone, empty land, I getting old, somewhere only we know, this could be the end of everything. I love you my baby boy.
