Katie Herzig – Closest I Get lyrics

What if I wait and you don't show
If I left you half just to keep me whole
What if I held my breath so long
Would you notice the silence had lasted so long
What if the closest I get to the moment is now

I have seen love come & go
I watched it pass with my heart held close
There's no easy way to know
If I'm looking back or if I'm getting close
What if the closest I get to the moment is now

Love it has no guarantees
Which muse will lay it's hands on me
We said the words we knocked on wood
And I'm still here waiting to see what could be.
What if the closest I get to the moment is now?

I think here she's dwelling on missed chances. In one interpretation, she could be talking about a lover she hopes to find a second chance with. While he's moving on, not noticing her "holding her breath," she's still waiting. What if that's the closest she gets? Waiting? In addition, she's offering him "half" of herself (maybe forgiving the reasons she left him) to keep herself whole with him.

But I think this song is more about taking a leap of faith. She's kept her heart close all her life, waiting for something to happen. But what if this is it? What if she can't wait anymore? What if THIS is the closest she gets to her moment? She can't worry about moving forward/backward. She just has to move. Love may not have guarantees, and all of the knocking on wood and promises in the world can't change that. But if she never takes the chance, how can she ever know? There is no "easy way" to know. But it's a journey she has to take.
