Well, I can't recall, one time in my life,
I've felt as lonely as I do tonight.
I feel like I could lay down, and get up no more,
It's the damndest feelin'; I never felt it before.

Tonight I feel like an old violin,
Soon to be put away and never played again.
Don't ask me why I feel like this, hell, I can't say.
I only wish this feelin' would just go away.

I guess it's 'cos the truth,
Is the hardest thing I ever faced.
'Cos you can't change the truth,
In the slightest way. I tried.

So I asked myself,
I said: 'John, where do you go from here?'
Then like a damned fool,
I turned around and looked in the mirror.

And there I saw, an old violin.
Soon to be put away and never played again.

So one more time, just to be sure,
I said: 'John, where in the hell do you go from here?'
You know that when a nickel's worth of beer,
When I looked in the mirror, that's when I knew.

That there I was seein', an old violin.
Soon to be put away, and never played again.

And just like that, it hit me,
That old violin and I were just alike.
We'd give our all to music,
And soon, we'll give our life.

I think he wrote this song while he was in a very depressed state of mind and he was spilling his heart out but just not with words that describe his hurt in his heart so he used a violin to describe the meaning of everything ... I personally love this song and its a very sad song but everytime i hear it it puts a smile on my face and i cant stop singin it

Johnny wrote this song just before going to prison. There is an overall sense through the song that his career was over and the honky tonker's life he was living had taken it's toll. Did he really mean that it was killing him... Yes. A person can't go on that long with a heart that broken. Music was his life and for him it seemed over.

I know exactly how he felt and what he meant when he wrote the song! He realized like a lot of folks do when the years slip away, his best days, musically speaking, were behind him! So like an old fiddle that has been well used for many years it was time to put it away, not to play anymore! A great use of words, metaphorically speaking! I write country songs myself and Johnny did a great job on this one! In my opinion! Frank.
