Woman of the country now that I found you
Longing for your soft and fertile delta
And I whisper sighs to satisfy your longing
For the warm and tender shelter of my body

Your mine, yes your mine delta lady
Your mine, be all mine
Delta lady

Please don't ask how many times I found you
Standing wet and naked in the garden
And I think of days
And different ways I held you
We were closely touching, yes our heart was beating

Your mine, yes your mine delta lady
Your mine, be all mine
Delta lady

Oh when I'm home again in England
I think of you love
Cause, I love you, love

There are concrete mountains in the city
And pretty city women live inside them
Oh but yet it seems the city scene is lacking
I'm so glad your waiting for me in the country

Your mine, yes your mine delta lady
Your mine, be all mine
Delta lady

Anyone know the shape of a delta? So what do you suppose a "soft and fertile delta" is, especially when associate with a lady? Wet? Naked? Yes, that's right, it's a song about a a private lady part, delta shaped. Do I need to draw you a picture or something?

This song was written and recorded by Leon Russell, who shared it with Joe Cocker, who he later toured with on the "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" tour back in 1970. The song has been reported repeatedly to have been written about Leon's girlfriend (at the time he wrote it), Rita Coolidge, who is from near Memphis Tennessee, thus the delta lady comes in. I am sure Leon enjoyed the double meaning of the term and it is certainly clever. Rita Coolidge later met, married, and divorced Kris Kristofferson.

I think it's joe's interpretation of stating he loves the nature and surroundings of the low delta country of the united states. It appears not about a particular women but of the beauty of the dew in the gardens, the whisper of the live oaks and the overall goodness of the delta region.
