Sloe Gin, sloe Gin
Tryin' to wash away the pain inside
Well I'm sick and I'm all done in
And I'm standing in the rain
And I feel like I'm gonna cry

I'm so damn lonely
And I ain't even high
I'm so damn lonely
And I feel like I'm gonna die

Mayday, mayday I've been shot down
Over the stormy sea
Well I feel that I'm drifting away
Can not seem to get a grip on me
Well. I can't even try

I'm so damn lonely
Ain't even high
I hate to go home alone,
But what else is new?
I'm so damn lonely

I hate to go home alone,
But what else is new?
I'm so damn lonely…

You stand and bleeding people pass me by
No matter if you live
No matter if you die

Sloe Gin, sloe Gin
Tryin' to wash away the pain inside
Well I'm sick and I'm all done in
I'm standing in the rain
And I feel like I'm gonna cry

I'm so damn lonely
Ain't even high
I'm so damn lonely…

I think this song is about so much more than simply losing someone. I think it is about regret and losing your own soul along with everything and everyone else. My job is to help indigent people gain skills to reenter the workforce. Many are homeless and recent parolees. One recent (but not unique)case in point: A man recently paroled after 9 years for a heinous crime. He is paroled to my county because his victim lives in his home county. He knows no one, no money, homeless, wearing a monitoring device. He thinks he can resume his life, but soon understands he is a pariah. No one will hire him, parole owns him, the police harass him. One day he told me he had a job interview. I was excited for him and told him to call me and let me know if he got the job. He looked at me and asked, "Who else could I call?). He didn't get that job and finally gave up and dropped my program. Saw him not long ago walking down towards the river (homeless camp), head down, carrying a 40. It was raining. Not making excuses for him or suggesting you feel sorry for him. Just saying that must be what lonliness is. He told me Joe Bonamassa is his favorite. That's why this song always makes me think of him.

Sounds like someone in desperate need of jesus coming in to fill that lonely void... As only he can satisfy anyway!

Its about having a hole in your heart that nothing seems able to fill. That empty part of yourself that is always lonely. We all have it.

Seems pretty clear. Man's wife or lover probably left him or passed away, and he doesn't know what to do with himself anymore except perhaps drown himself in some gin.

I think that it is fairly obvious, a very lonely man, drinking to numb the pain. He throws in a few very graphic discriptions to make his point.
