Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear lyrics
We speak in the store
I'm a sensitive bore
You seem markedly more
And I'm oozing suprise

But it's late in the day
And you're well on your way
What was golden went gray
And I'm suddenly shy

And the gathering floozies
Afford to be choosy
And all sneezing darkly
In the dimming divide

And I have read the right book
To interpret your look
You were knocking me down
With the palm of your eye

This was unlike the story
It was written to be
I was riding it's back
When it used to ride me

And we were galloping manic
To the mouth of the source
We were swallowing panic
In the face of it's force

And I am blue
I am blue and unwell
Made me bolt like a horse

Now it's done
Watch it go
You've changed some
Water runs from the snow

Am I so dear
Do I run rare
You've changed some
Peach, plum, pear
Peach, plum

It is a lovely song that really captures a moment in time where being shy and awkward really hurts her chances for happiness. The brief encounter and chance conversation did not go the way she had hoped. She then reflects on what happened and it makes her sad that things do not go the way she wished them to be. The peach, plum, pear reference is a poetic tool she is using as it rhymes and has a great resonance when sung with the previous verses. On a side note the dim-witted comments are not witty.

I'm not sure if it's intentional or not but this song has a lot of extremely sexual imagery in it. "oozing surprise", "gathering floozies ... Sneezing darkly", "riding its back", "mouth of the source", "swallowing panic". Maybe I need to get my mind out of the gutter or maybe ms. Newsom is being very clever playing with our subconscious minds. The phrase "peach, plum, pear" itself could be a euphemism for s** organs. If I had to guess I'd say this song is about being shy and losing people, but it either intentionally or unintentionally strings through lots of sexual undertones. And s** is, of course, an important part of being shy and losing people.

Joanna Newsom fans: I'm so excited about something!. Here's what: I've been reading a book to Aniese called "in the Garden with Van Goh" and there's a line in the book that says "we'll feast on peaches plums and pears" so obviously I think of Joanna, and I just did a little digging and discovered that van Goh loved flowering trees, particularly peach plum and pear trees/blossoms. To him they symbolized awakening and hope. I think that song is about him.
Okay that's all. Fan moment. Love.
