Jimi Hendrix – Hey Joe lyrics

Hey Joe, a-where you goin' with that gun in your hand
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand, oh yeah

I'm going down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' around with another man, yeah
I'm going down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' around with another man, huh
And that ain't too cool brother

Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down,
You shot her down, now
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your old lady down,
You shot her down to the ground, yeah

Yes I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' round, messin' round town
Yes I did, I shot her
You know I caught my old lady messin' around town
And I gave her the gun I shot her!

Alright Shoot her one more time again for me

Yeah, Ohhh dig it, Ah, Ah Alright

Hey Joe, say now where you gonna run to now?
Where you gonna run to?
Hey Joe, I said where you gonna run to now?
Where you, where you gonna go?

Well, dig it
I'm goin' way down south,
Way down to Mexico way Alright
I'm goin' way down south,
Way down where I can be free
Ain't no one gonna find me

Ain't no hangman gonna,
He ain't gonna put a rope around me
You better believe it right now
I gotta go now
Hey, Hey Joe, you better run on down
Good by everybody ohh
Hey Joe, uhh
Run on down

Well, the way I see it he's telling a story about a pal of his named joe who got fed up with his woman for messing around with other men. He puts massive emphasis on the fact that joe shot his woman, leading me to believe that jimi sang this song about how easy it is to take a life. However, in referring to the hangman, I felt that jimi used that as a symbol for the desperation of joe in his life, the anger, the bad things that made life bad for him. In simpler terms, the unfairness of the whole concept of the american government at the time. So yeah. Either that or he was having a really jacked lsd dream.

Well I think it's obvious that Joe's woman did him wrong so he took care of her with his gun. Then went on the run to Mexico to avoid his sentence. Not saying I agree with Joe's methods but it makes for an interesting, haunting song. Guess we won't be seeing Joe around here no more! Love how Hendrix can sing all the changes in melody while playing his guitar, left handed upside down even!
