Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
And she tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

(Yeah but) Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor, (You know)
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Hallelujah...

[Instrumental]

Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelu...
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelu...
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Hallellllluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuujjjaahhhh... Hallelllluuuuuujjaaaaaaaaaahhhh

This is a song about king david and his love affair with bathsheba. How he saw her bathing on her rooftop from his palace and wanted her. This is what seperated david from god (remember he was god's annointed leader for isreal) until he finally repented on his death bed. That is the broken hallelujah in the lyrics. It is also a song of faith, as it does give you the feeling of peace that comes with an unhindered relationship to god. I love this song, and always listen to it when i need to calm my soul and reduce the stress in my life.

Bibical refferenes from the bible of temtation and passion. The song is noted for containing biblical references in the lyrics, alluding to David’s harp-playing used to soothe King Saul (I Sam 16:23), and his later affair with Bathsheba after watching her bathe from his roof (2 Sam 11:2).

I think it's almost a cry of brokenness showing that we have to be completely humbled and broken to the point where our hallelujah becomes a cry of despair of wanting god and saying that we can't do it without him. He wants to hear that. Because then he picked you back and carries you.

Yes all the above is true. Within the lyrics expresses how a single man could rise in the sight of god and own his heart. Yet, he was just a man and with him the frailties accompanied by the very human desires we all wrestle with. Still, he was the one man that god loved above all others and like so many others, he too failed in the sight of god but redemption and forgiveness is still within our grasp, if we would only ask for it.

We start out walking in the lord.. Moving in the spirit of god, but love, circumstance, sin all enter to put a wedge between us and the holiness of god. Despite how many times we fail, at the end, we have come back and all we have is singing the praises of god.
