I'm sorry about your parents, they sound like bad people
Your daddy sounds like a jerk
I guess your mama didn't know the gift she got when she got you
I'm sorry about your life, you had it pretty rough
Bending over backwards, never good enough
You poor thing, it must suck to be you
And I know it's not your fault, it never is, is it
?

I know what it's like staying up all night nursing wounds
It takes more than I have, pick fights with the past, I always lose
Oh, don't you know? That's no way to live
I know what it's like staying up all night nursing wounds

I get it, give me a little credit
I remember when I was that pathetic
Wear my scars on my sleeve, for all the world to see
Like look what they did to me quick, lay on the sympathy thick

You probably have the right to feel how you do
You were mistreated and cheated out of the childhood you needed
And now you'll never succeed if you're so convinced you're defeated
If you're obsessed with your yesterday then you're destined to repeat it
And I know it's not your fault, it never is, is it, is it, is it?

I know what it's like staying up all night nursing wounds
It takes more than I have, pick fights with the past, I always lose
Oh, don't you know? That's no way to live
I know what it's like staying up all night nursing wounds

It sounds like your parents got devoursed, your dad is mean, i don't know about when it says " i guess your mama didn't know the gift she got when she got you," you had a rough time getting used to your different life, trying to get over it but it's never good enough, you poor thing you must hate to be you, i under stand you didn't have anything to do with it, i know how it feels staying up all night worrying about if it will be like this forever, it takes more than i have to forget about the past to have is never work, i get it give me a little credit, i have had that happen to me too, i don't know what " wear my scars on my sleeves for all the world to see like look what they did to me quick lay on the sympathy thick,"means, but i know the next lyrics, you have the right to feel how you feel, you were not treated right in your childhood, you can't let it devouer you, or you won't go anywhere in life, if you keep worrying about what happened, then life will just slip by without you knowing, and you shouldn't live your life worrying about what happened, and or what will happen.

No. This person goes around gaining sympathy for how bad she has things. Ariel is saying that other people have been there, and it could be worse. The girl is playing 'oh woe is me' and Ariel is basically saying "suck it up, I've been there too, and I'm not going to put up with your needing for attention" so basically the girl is searching for attention instead of dealing with her problems and Ariel finds it pathetic.

To me this song is about an abusive family and the singer is comforting the child or was the child in third person point of view. It kind of reminds me of Johnny Cade from The Outsiders by S E Hinton. Or maybe it's just me looking too far into it.
