Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Away, you rollin' river
O Shenandoah, I long to hear you.
Away I'm bound to go
'Cross the wide Missouri.
'Tis seven long years since I last saw you
Away, you rollin' river
'Tis seven long years since I last saw you
Away I'm bound to go
'Cross the wide Missouri.

Oh Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you
Away, you rollin' river.
O Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you,
Away I'm bound to go
'Cross the wide Missouri.

For me the song's haunting melody and lyrics are about pleasant memories I wish to retain but must move on from. Shenandoah represents that special place in my memory that I long for but can't go back to. Missouri represents the present or future that I must now live in.

Shenandoah literally refers to a place in pennsylvania, but in a native american language it means "daughter of the stars". The wide missouri river, a long and winding river, represents life and the many different paths it may take, and many different factors that affect one's life. Crossing the missouri is like crossing to the other side.

I've heard that it's about missing someone or something that really meant a lot to you, and it's about the emotions that came with losing them. Well, that's one interpretation at least.

I've also heard that it's about a trader who fell in love with an indian chief's daughter and he's telling him about how he plans to take her away " 'cross the wide missouri. "
