Gordon Lightfoot – Rainy Day People lyrics

Rainy day people always seem to know when it's time to call
Rainy day people don't talk, they just listen till they've heard it all
Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell 'ya they've been down like you
Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin' a tear or two
If you get lonely, all you really need is that rainy day love
Rainy day people all know there's no sorrow they can't rise above
Rainy day lovers don't love any others, that would not be kind
Rainy day people all know how it hangs on a piece of mind

Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you, they've been down there too
Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin' a tear or two.

Rainy day people always seem to know when you're feeling blue
High stepping strutters who land in the gutters sometimes need one too
Take it or leave it, or try to believe it
If you've been down too long

Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on
Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on

This is my favorite song of all time and I think the greatest song ever written. That's just my personal opinion. Gord has a way of connecting with people through song. Bob Dylan once said that "When you hear a Gordon Lightfoot song, you never want it to end." I think there is some truth to that statement. There is a certain something that has drawn me to "Rainy Day People". It could be the simplicity of that mid-70's Singer-Songwriter sound that the song has. It may be the fact that it makes me reflect on life every time I hear it. It could be that I think it's just a great song. I don't know.

To me, the meaning of "Rainy Day People" goes deep. I think on one hand, it captures the true essence of those certain people in our life who have always been there during the darkest times in our life and who will always be that person we can turn to and talk to about life. On another hand, I think the song is telling us that we too are "Rainy Day People" and that we need to value the relationships we have with the people we have in our life because after all, we're all human and all need someone who'll be there for us. I think this song has a spiritual aspect too, whether Lightfoot intended it to or not. If a person were to open a Bible and read Galatians 6:2, I think they would understand what I mean when I say it has a spiritual aspect.

Songs mean different things to different people and this is just my interpretation of my favorite song.

I agree with your interpretation for this song. We all need someone or certain people who will always be there for us. This life is really a lonely road and it's hard to find people who can be always there. It's really nice to know that some people have found the rainy day people in their life. Lucky you for you have found someone you can turn to and talk about your life. Hoping I would have some one that I can really turn to and talk about life and who will always be there for me. Good Bible verse.
