I found a letter in the mail box today
And I said thank you for your thoughts but I'm done
I said that I would never build this up right here
He said that's why I can't work with you son
But I can't let this go I'm on my way
And you can only hold my diamond ring
I'll go crawling back to the city I love
Cause it's already taken everything [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/g/good_old_war/coney_island.html ]
I'm going to Coney Island have myself a dog
And reminisce why I still hate it here
It's all these people with their cotton candy eyes
It's so sweet now put the train in gear
I can't let this go I'm on my way
And you can only hold my diamond ring
I'll go crawling back to the city I love
Cause it's already taken everything
The ground is swallowing my options for release
And if it rains they might just disappear
I counted 27 birds up there today
I'm thinking that's why I still love it here
I'm thinking that's why I still love it here
I can't let this go I'm on my way
And you can only hold my diamond ring
I'll go crawling back to the city I love
Cause it's already taken everything
Never forget your roots!!! That's what get out of it

He gets a letter in the mail from someone in coney island after moving away with his father when his parents separated. And he wouldnt have set up his life in this other place like his father did. And the diamond ring is used in context where it seems like a useless item. After the divorce, his parents ring means nothing now. He goes to coney island and sets up his life, the dog meaning that he is settling there. How when youre settled, you get a dog or have a child. He gets nostalgic with coney island, remembering his childhood and how he loves it there. When youre a kid, people act very nice to you and give you what you want... Being "cotton candy eyed"
the last verse is difficult... I dont quite understand it, but i feel that it has to do with a playground and he cant escape and move on with life with all the memories around him

When people grow up you find your roots and where you really want to be. So we ultimately decide for ourselves where we call home, despite anybody's opinion.
