Glass Animals – Gooey lyrics
I come close
Let me show you everything I know
The jungle slang
Spinning around my head and I stare.
While my naked fool

Fresh out of an icky gooey womb.
A woozy youth
Dopes up on a silky smooth perfume.

Right my little pooh bear, wanna take a chance?
Wanna sip this smooth air, kick it in the sand?
I'd say I told you so, but you just gonna cry,
You just wanna know those peanut butter vibes
.

My, my simple sir, this ain't gonna work.
Mind my wicked words and tipsy topsy slurs
.
I can't take this place, I can't take this place.
I just wanna go where I can get some space.

Truth be told,
I've been here, I've done this all before.
I take your gloom,
I cut it up and puff it into plume,

Right my little pooh bear, wanna take a chance?
Wanna sip this smooth air, kick it in the sand?
I'd say I told you so, but you just gonna cry,
You just wanna know those peanut butter vibes.

My, my simple sir, this ain't gonna work.
Mind my wicked words and tipsy topsy slurs.
I can't take this place, I can't take this place.
I just wanna go where I can get some space.

Hold my hand, flow back to the summer time.
Tangled in the willows, now comes the tide.
How can I believe you, how can I be nice?
Tripping around the tree stumps in your summer smile.

Right
my little pooh bear, wanna take a chance?
Wanna sip this smooth air, kick it in the sand?
I'd say I told you so but you just gonna cry,
You just wanna know those peanut butter vibes.

My, my simple sir, this ain't gonna work.
Mind my wicked words and tipsy topsy slurs.
I can't take this place, I can't take this place.
I just wanna go where I can get some space.

I read a lot of subtext into these lyrics and a story plays out in my head, when I hear this.

"I come close.. lemme show you everything I know" is initiating a sexual encounter.

"The jungle slang, Spinning around my head and I stare.
While my naked fool... Dopes up on a silky smooth perfume." means his mind is elsewhere as they are engaged in sex. It's still an enjoyable experience for him, but that's all this is to him: sex.

"Right my little pooh bear". To right something means to make it upright or erect again. "Wanna take a chance?.. kick it in the sand." is an invitation to do it again.

"I'd say I told you so, but you just gonna cry..." His partner wants more out of the connection that sex. They want more.

"My, my simple sir, this ain't gonna work... I just wanna go where I can get some space." He and his sexual partner are in conflict. He's getting annoyed and wants to leave, get some space.

"Hold my hand, flow back to the summer time... summer smile". This verse is him reminiscing on their past encounters, making out, getting physical, idealizing how good it was. We go back to the chorus "wanna take a chance... I just need some space" where he's back in conflict with his partner over their differences in wants/needs.

    "Truth be told,
I've been here, I've done this all before.
    I take your gloom,
I cut it up and puff it into plume"
He doesn't care that his partner is upset and disappointed. He cares so little about their gloom that he figuratively cuts it up and burns it into smoke. They can't work through their differences. He's selfish, because he ignores their gloom and goes right back to remembering their summer encounter, making out and asking if they want to get physical.

Wow, reading WAY too much into it. This is about as deep as it is - frontman Dave Bayley told The Quietus the story of the song: "'Gooey' started off as a beat I'd made for a hip hop artist," he said. "I was just going through some beats I had made for someone, choosing which to send off, and I got to this one and listened to it a couple times. At that point it was just the bass line, drums, percussion, and little glock riff. All of a sudden those chords popped into my head and I got the piano out and started tinkering and then the, 'Right, my little Pooh Bear' vocal line popped into my head, and then the rest. I ended up making this eight-minute groove track. Then I showed it to the guys and we took it to the studio where we shaved off a few minutes."

Omg... no. Just no with the drugs... just cuz u can relate to it via ur acid trip. And yes, I enjoy a cap or tab here n there but no.

Reading about what the singer said about it... it sounds a lot like he just came up with it real quick but obviously had something going on in his mind some sort of picture or memory. I would put my money time that it's about a child literally about either daughter son niece or nephew at a really young age. It perfectly sums up a mother or fathers day where the only company you got speaks gibberish and thinks peanut butter is an acceptable hair styling product.

Okay, to everyone who thinks that the singer is a "she".
Guys can sing high too! Dave Bayley is just using his head voice. It's fairly common for male singers in this type of Genre to do that. You can usually tell when a singer is female, as they typically have a sort of higher-pitched quality to their voices. When listening to Gooey, you can hear Bayley's voice is darker than your typical female singer.

The singer talks about getting high on different forms of hallucinogenics. She talks first about dope, and then it sounds as though she, and the partner she's getting high with, get into harder forms of the stuff. The singer says she's done this far too many times and that her partner, as he gets into the stronger drugs, seems to be unable to handle it as he becomes more upset. The singer tries to help him through it to have a better 'ride' during his hallucinogenics, but the more she tries to help him the more she realizes that she just wants to ride her own high by herself. Despite this, starting with the dope and going for stronger drugs, each time she says she wants to get away and find her own place, she still goes for stronger drugs and still wants to get away from it all. The singer is losing trust in herself and in her partner the more the pair get sucked into their drugged induced fantasy, and the more they dig deeper into the rabbit hole, the more she finds herself getting stuck. The singer realizes that the more she indulges in her drugs, the more she can escape reality.
