Have you seen the well-to-do, up and down Park Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare, with their noses in the air
High hats and Arrowed collars, white spats and lots of dollars
Spending every dime, for a wonderful time
If you're blue and you don't know where to go to
Why don't you go where fashion sits,
Puttin' on the ritz.
Different types who wear a daycoat, pants with stripes
And cut away coat, perfect fits,
Puttin' on the ritz.
Dressed up like a million dollar trouper
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper (super duper)
Come let's mix where Rockefellers walk with sticks
Or umbrellas in their mitts
Puttin' on the Ritz

Tips his hat just like an english chappie
To a lady with a wealthy pappy (very snappy)
You'll declare it's simply topping to be there
And hear them swapping smart titbits
Puttin' on the ritz!

It's a very above-it-all tune that portrays the higher living of that time. Superficiality seems to play a large part, as it hints that people are personified by their clothing. Genius rhymes and clever rhymic syncopation make this song absolutely over the top wonderful! I'm 13 and i'd choose this type of song over today's music any day. We applaud you, irving berlin!

Technically this song is, in a sense, mocking the people that are not rich, but pulls it off that they are from spending almost everything they have to look higher than their social status. A nice, short funny song.

This is a fantastic song. I am into early 30's to late 80's music and this is a great piece of music. Fred Astaire keeps the pompous funny look about him. His personality looked so lovable. He had great charisma during his dances and songs. Jumping up and clicking his tap shoes!

The revised lyrics here imply a different meaning than what irving berlin originally intended, which was a somewhat mocking portrayal of poor harlemites who would dress fashionably and parade around lenox avenue "spending every dime for a wonderful time". The lyrics later invite the listener to "come with me and we'll attend their jubilee and watch them spend their last two bits, puttin on the ritz".

I love this song it is my favorite! Doing it for show stoppers in a few weeks. My class mates and I are all enjoying our music lessons learning the song! Can't wait to perform it to my friends and family, this song is so jazzy and groovy, it always puts a smile on face! It even makes me want to go to the ritz! I think I have already expressed my feelings about the song (Awesome!). If anyone thinks I am being crazy then they have another thing coming! It is my last year of school and I love spending the last few minutes I have with the people at my school, while we enjoy ourselves and have fun! My family have never been the posh type and I can really take the Mickey out on the song. I think you can say that if you want to forget about anything bad in your life then sing the ritz song and you will be alright! I would recommend putting this on the soundtrack of you birthday party! It will definitely get the grownups going! Well I think this is enough of me rambling about the song! Please get it on iTunes!
