(Let us break bread together on our knees.)
(Let us break bread together on our knees.)
(When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,
(Oh oh Lord, have mercy on me.)
(Let us break bread together on our knees, on our knees.)
(Let us break bread together on our knees, on our knees.)
(When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,)
(Oh oh Lord, have mercy on me.)
Let us drink wine together on our knees.

(When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,)
(Oh oh Lord, have mercy on me.)
(Let us pray God together on our knees,)
(On our knees, let us pray God together on our knees)
(On my knees, when I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,

Oh oh Lord, have mercy on me.

This is a beautiful african-american spiritual, and like most other african-american spirituals, it communicates courage, celebrates freedom, and praises god. In my cultural tradition (not african american but christian), the chorus of the song invokes images of headstones in a cemetery-- all facing east, the direction of the rising sun, awaiting the resurrection. Thus i find a sad tone also in the song because the slaves of the antebellum south too often found freedom only in death.
