And I had a dream
About my old school
And she was there all pink and gold and glittering
I threw my arms around her legs
Came to weeping
(Came to weeping)
Came to weeping
(Came to weeping)

Then I heard your voice as clear as day,
And you told me I should concentrate,
It was all so strange,
And so surreal,
That a ghost should be so practical.

Only if for a night
And the only solution was to stand and fight,
And my body was bruised and
I was set alight,
But you came over me like some holy rite,
And although I was burning,
You're the only light
Only if for a night

The grass was so green against my new clothes,
And I did cartwheels in your honor, dancing on tiptoes
My own secret ceremonials before the service began,
In the graveyard, doing handstands.

And I heard your voice as clear as day,
And you told me I should concentrate,
It was all so strange,
And so surreal,
That a ghost should be so practical.

Only if for a night.
And the only solution was to stand and fight,
And my body was bruised and
I was set alight,
But you came over me like some holy rite,

And although I was burning,
You're the only light.
Only if for a night.

My doe, my dear, my darling,
Tell me what all this sighing's about,
Tell me what all this sighing's about.

And I heard your voice as clear as day,
And you told me I should concentrate,
It was all so strange,
And so surreal,
That a ghost should be so practical.

Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night.
Yeyeyeyeye-yeyeyeyeyeye-ahhaaaoooh.
Only if for a night

The ghost is insisting she wake from her reality. Because after all, what's real, really isn't real at all. :] that ghost is really herself, living out the spirit, love & wisdom of her lost childhood friend.
*Standing in my kitchen one night, I truly did feet on fire. There she was, coming to me as the brightest ball of energy my eyes have ever seen in this dimension. It's more than just a childhood friend passing, it's a first love. Forever stoking the fire within *

This is, quite simply. And in a single word. Magnificence.
And so, as in life, so too in creation, reflections on earth of those slivers of that heavenly rest that awaits us all. Such is florence and the machine. Music that takes you away. Takes you away caressed and cared for on the musical equivalent of a lovers embrace. So arch your back. Reach for the heavens. Strain your eyes for those who await us at the end of our tribulations. Drift away on heavenly graceful notes.

I think it is a primary school teacher who was influential on florence. The line you told me I should concentrate and the surprise that a ghost should be so practical expresses florence's amazement that in spirit her teacher remains as much a pillar of strength as she did back when she was a young child. I like the chemistry lesson explanation though! But she must have been a tall chemistry teacher if florence could throw her arms around her legs.
Great, if a little crazy, lyrics though.

I believe it has to do with some sort of visitation from a deceased member of her family possibly? At some point in her childhood, her grandmother passed, and another family member killed herself, according to various articles on the internet. Sounds like the 'ghost' is encouraging her, telling her to not lose heart (sighing)--to stand and fight. She obviously loved this person because she wept and was so happy.

In this poem florence describes a dream in which she goes to her old school and a ghost tells her to concentrate. Moments later she is aflame doing cartwheels all over the place. It is clearly an allusion to the chemistry lesson during which her failure to pay attention caused a terrible incendiary incident during which her hair turned red.
I would also like to point out that the lyric which reads 'my doe, my dear, ' should read 'my doe, my deer. ' it is a reference to florence's pet deer which followed her everywhere and tragically died in the chemistry explosion. 'tell me what all this sighing's about' relates to her father's reaction to yet another letter from the headmaster warning that florence's surreal behaviour was getting out of hand.
