Florence & The Machine – Kiss With A Fist lyrics

You hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our beds

You hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed

My black eye casts no shadow
Your red eye sees nothing
Your slaps don't stick, your kicks don't hit
So we remain the same

Love sticks, sweat drips
Break the lock if it don't fit
A kick in the teeth is good for some
A kiss with a fist is better then none
A kiss with a fist is better then none

I broke your jaw once before
I spilled your blood upon the floor
You broke my leg in return
So sit back and watch the bed burn

Love sticks, sweat drips
Break the lock if it don't fit
A kick to the teeth is good for some
A kiss with a fist is better then none
A kiss with a fist is better then none

You hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed

You hit me once, I hit you back
You gave a kick, I gave a slap
You smashed a plate over my head
Then I set fire to our bed

This is about loving violence -when physical violence is the most satisfying kiss possible. The tone of both the lyric and vocal suggests the violence was very much consensual in some way. Decidedly f**ked up, good that the song lasts but two minutes but a "Kiss With a Fist" Is better than none.

The song sounds almost jovial, like there's nothing really going on with her and her partner. They physically abuse each other, and yet I wont pretend to think that the abuse is actually physical. Maybe a game of t** for tat? Scratch my back I scratch yours, Claw my eyes out and I'll claw yours.
They're involved in this struggle against each other, while wanting to end the pain they still want each other. They contribute to their own undoing.
"Then I set fire to our bed"
This line is significant. So much that the intepretation depends on the person listening to the song. The bed might be the relationship, and yet the fire might not be fire in itself but passion. This could constitute making love after a violent battle :)
    That's my interpretation! : p
