I was a heavy heart to carry
My beloved was weighed down
My arms around his neck
My fingers laced to crown.

I was a heavy heart to carry
My feet dragged across ground
And he took me to the river
Where he slowly let me drown

My love has concrete feet
My love's an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall

I'm so heavy, heavy
Heavy in your arms
I'm so heavy, heavy
Heavy in your arms

And is it worth the wait
All this killing time?
Are you strong enough to stand
Protecting both your heart and mine?

Who is the betrayer?
Who's the killer in the crowd?
The one who creeps in corridors
And doesn't make a sound

My love has concrete feet
My love's an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall

My love has concrete feet
My love's an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall

I'm so heavy, heavy
Heavy in your arms
I'm so heavy, heavy
So heavy in your arms

This will be my last confession
I love you never felt like any blessing
(Ohhhh)
Whispering like it's a secret
Only to condemn the one who hears it
With a heavy heart

Heavy heavy I'm so heavy in your arms
(I'm so) Heavy heavy I'm so heavy in your arms
(I'm so) Heavy heavy I'm so heavy in your arms
(I'm so) Heavy heavy I'm so heavy in your arms

I was a heavy heart to carry
My beloved was weighed down
My arms around his neck
My fingers laced to crown

I was a heavy heart to carry
But he never let me down
When he had me in his arms
My feet never touched the ground

I'm so heavy, heavy in your arms.

Heavy, I'm so heavy in your arms.

I think too that this song is referring to depression. She was with someone who supported her and tried to make her happy, but her deep depression made her "heavy" and started dragging him into darkness; she realized this and felt incredibly guilty about that, but they both went on (especially him) thinking that they could sort that out.
But then things kept getting worse and she, seeing him so weighed down, decided to let him go, asking him "Are you strong enough to stand/Protecting both your heart and mine?"
However, she still felt like she was drowning, because she loves him so much (so much that she doesn't care about herself and wants him only to be happy)
I also think that, after that, she is planning to take her own life, in fact she says "This will be my last confession"
In the end (maybe while leaving this world??) she remembers how wonderful he was with and how he really tried to make it work -this doesn't have a happy ending.

I think it means that she has had a very depressing past. She has a lot to carry on her shoulders, and the relationship that she was in, she felt as if she was just a heavy burden.
Him having to deal with how she is (acts) due to those past events. Some that she's not able to change, and those that she can't change, upsets him a lot. And she sees this, yet is unable to do anything about it.
Like, she's the weight holding him down, from going forth and advancing to what he wishes to be/do.

This song is about how someone feels they are unaccepted by jesus christ because they have felt they have done wrong; therefore making them heavy. The lines:.
"i was a heavy heart to carry.
But he never let me down.
When he had me in his arms.
My feet never touched the ground".
These words prove that the help of god can create anything is possible even if you don't believe you are worthy.

I think they are having an affair and the illicit love is a burden to both him and her. Her love for him is overwhelming and she can't stop it, but the burden of guilt is too much, giving her a heavy heart. Her love for him would be like an iron ball, dragging him down, so she is trying to say goodbye.
