Florence & The Machine – Girl With One Eye lyrics

She told me not to step on the cracks
I told her not to fuss and relax
Pretty little thing stopped me in my tracks
But now she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay

I took a knife and cut out her eye
I took it home and watched it wither and die
Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile
That's why she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry

I slipped my hand under her skirt
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt
Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt
That's why you sleep with one eye open
But that's the price you pay

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry

You made me cry
You made me cry
You made me cry

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out my pie

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry

Thought provoking indeed. It's dark, could mean a thousand different things. It's up to the individual. Now that I've read it was originally sung by a male band, it's totally deleted my previous thoughts on it. Could be about a sick mother son sexual relationship. 'she told me not to step on the cracks' - step on a crack = break your mother's back. Meddling fingers, pay back - fingers up the skirt and the withering dying eye. May be mummy went too far. Very sad and freaky.

I don't get it:/ I know she covered it so I don't think it's lesbian but the guys who wrote it sound dark and sick. I think sometimes she is a little to intense and strange the line about hands ups skirts is pretty sick. If it's about rape I think songs like that shouldn't be wrote like that, they should be more sensitive to the issue like pinks long way to happy. I like most of her songs and I love her sound but the lyrics in this song mildly disgusted me.

I think this is just a sing about florence and she had a lover. Then the gwoe came and took him. Flo wants revenge and gives it to her. But what I can't get my head round is that what if flo was the 'bad guy' and was just a jealous girl that wanted a guy for herself. Or maybe we are all wrong. I mean it could be over a pie for gods sake!

    G. W. O. E tells singer not to step on the cracks (bring up the bad stuff that's going on, not to meddle wats going on behind her back) and the singer finds out and cut out her eye (revenge as in an eye for an eye) now the G. W. O. E is paranoid on what the singer will do to her. I think the G. W. O. E cheated on her. "get your filthy fingers (filthy cause she slept with somone else) outta my pie (his life)". And I think he raped her as revenge so she would be scared of him.

The original song was sung by a man. I think that this song talks about a man who is betrayed by his lover, maybe she was cheating him and that man wants revenge and he wants to cut her little heart like she did it to him. There is an expression 'have a finger in every pie' which means to be involved in many activities. Here, the activities maybe are the other lovers, so when he says 'get your filthy fingers out of my pie' means that he doesn't want to have anything with her anymore and he just doesn't want to be an other 'pie' for her.
