And the heart is hard to translate,
It has a language of it's own,
It talks in tongues and quiet sighs
And prayers and proclamations,
In the grand days of great men
And the smallest of gestures,
In short shallow gasps.

But with all my education,
I can't seem to command it,
And the words are all escaping,
And coming back all damaged,
And I would put them back in poetry,
If I only knew how,
I can't seem to understand it.

And I would give all this and heaven too,
I would give it all if only for a moment,
That I could just understand
The meaning of the word, you see,
'Cause I've been scrawling it forever,
But it never makes sense to me at all.

And it talks to me in tiptoes,
And sings to me inside,
It cries out in the darkest night,
And breaks in morning light.

But with all my education,
I can't seem to command it,
And the words are all escaping,
And coming back all damaged,
And I would put them back in poetry,
If I only knew how,
I can't seem to understand it.

And I would give all this and heaven too,
I would give it all if only for a moment,
That I could just understand
The meaning of the word, you see,
'Cause I've been scrawling it forever,
But it never makes sense to me at all.

And I would give all this and heaven too,
I would give it all if only for a moment,
That I could just understand
The meaning of the word, you see,
'Cause I've been scrawling it forever,
But it never makes sense to me at all.

No words or language,
It doesn't deserve such treatment,
And all my stumbling phrases,
Never amounted to anything worth this feeling,
All this heaven,
Never could describe such a feeling as I'm having,
Words were never so useful,
So I was screaming out a language
That I never knew existed before.

Love communicates in many ways, and since the dawn of the human race we have tried to explain it. But love is individual to each of us, some people say it makes us blind others say it opens our eyes, some say they dream of demons others say they dream of angels. Maybe love is the middle ground and the poetry is lost in translation.

Its like you've been lost in this world searching for something you can't see and desperately trying to understand what you can't feel and then out of nowhere something hits you like an explosion and all the pieces come together. And even though you may never be able to explain the feeling, you know that you've finally felt it. You're screaming out a language that you never knew existed before. :)

Quite simple! Who can project and define the meaning of love and its mystical hold on any of us? Poets? Psalmists? Playwrights make feeble attempts to display it on stage.. But it's the words.. Words that escape us.. Like speaking in the spirit.. The spirit moans and groans and tells it like it is.. But there are no words that do it justice.. If there were.. What are they?

It's worth comparing this to goethe's introduction of faust: the character is disenchanted with the weakness of actual (academic, pedantic) words and bets his soul ("all this and heaven too") against mephisto's ability to make him want to be entirely content just for an instant ("if only for a moment")

It really makes me think what it would take, for me to want to give up all this and heaven. (or perfect future happiness). How raw, desperate or irrationalyou would feel to want to, for just one moment of understanding. And how much pain and longing for it. Love the song and the depth of mistery.
