Florence + The Machine – All This And Heaven Too lyrics
And the heart is hard to translate,
It has a language of it's own,
It talks in tongues and quiet sighs
And prayers and proclamations,
In the grand days of great men
And the smallest of gestures,
In short shallow gasps.

But with all my education,
I can't seem to command it,
And the words are all escaping,
And coming back all damaged,
And I would put them back in poetry,
If I only knew how,
I can't seem to understand it.

And I would give all this and heaven too,
I would give it all if only for a moment,
That I could just understand
The meaning of the word, you see,
'Cause I've been scrawling it forever,
But it never makes sense to me at all.

And it talks to me in tiptoes,
And sings to me inside,
It cries out in the darkest night,
And breaks in morning light.

But with all my education,
I can't seem to command it,
And the words are all escaping,
And coming back all damaged,
And I would put them back in poetry,
If I only knew how,
I can't seem to understand it.

And I would give all this and heaven too,
I would give it all if only for a moment,
That I could just understand
The meaning of the word, you see,
'Cause I've been scrawling it forever,
But it never makes sense to me at all.

And I would give all this and heaven too,
I would give it all if only for a moment,
That I could just understand
The meaning of the word, you see,
'Cause I've been scrawling it forever,
But it never makes sense to me at all.

No words or language,
It doesn't deserve such treatment,
And all my stumbling phrases,
Never amounted to anything worth this feeling,
All this heaven,
Never could describe such a feeling as I'm having,
Words were never so useful,
So I was screaming out a language
That I never knew existed before.

Omg I can't even. I love this song so much. It has multiple meanings. It could be about love, I think, well that's the most obvious meaning; she can't translate exactly what love is. In the part "that i could just understand the meaning of the word you see" the word she is describing is love. She can't understand it but she would "give all this and heaven too (everything she has)" to either have it or at least fully understand it. But in the end she realized that "words were never so useful" in describing the feeling so it did not matter that she did not have a full grasp/understanding of love. And in the end she is "screaming out a language that she never knew existed before". So though she doesn't understand love she is elated to be in love and to express her happiness in her own manner,
the other meaning I think could be, instead of a romantic love that I described above, it could be a love for god.

Words are not the things they describe so will always be limited. They provide the surface structure of the deep structure of our experience and there'll never be enough words to truly express this meaning! So, we must work with what we've got and allow our hearts to do the talking. The words can then flow in a meaningful way! Florence will probably have to keep writing these amazing songs for a lifetime and we'll all have to keep finding our special meaning in them!

I love this song. Why? I'm a g** christian male from san diego (a big city mind you). For some reason I chose to believe that god loves me no matter what. As long as I follow the basic rules of life (i. E. No killing, stealing). This song evokes that god and love feeling. So to me "the word scrawled" is either the word "god" or "love". Who knows. But maybe in my head they are the same thing. Whatever the case is, this album has reaffirmed that god loves me, and god loves that I love others. Is that christianity? Who knows. What I know is that florence and the machine always affirm what I beleive spiritually. Weird how that works huh.

Its like you've been lost in this world searching for something you can't see and desperately trying to understand what you can't feel and then out of nowhere something hits you like an explosion and all the pieces come together. And even though you may never be able to explain the feeling, you know that you've finally felt it. You're screaming out a language that you never knew existed before. :)

    All this and heaven too.
Simply means that actual heaven is in the word too, which may refer to all, to nothing, ro anyting whatsoever but actually refers to unconditional soulmates.
The lyrics are startling because they're extreme richness lies in the removal of all excesses and common stereotypes for defining soulshipmates.
Soulmates find each other when they forget what they already learned can't find the words think they're wrong when they're shyness and modesty is the love they see int heir eyes.

The word she is trying to understand is love. She, who knows all and understands everything, cannot understand this seemingly simple thing. She's tried everything to untangle the mystery, but it nothing has ever worked. She also doesn't understand why it's so out of her control. She would give up anything if she could just know for an instant what it is, how it works, and why it happens.
Honestly? I feel like I wrote this song. It pretty much describes my dealings with love. This is why I love florence- she truly connects to each and every listener's soul.
By the way, I think it's "command". Not "commend".

Good point, but I do not think it is possible to ever understand the language of the heart. When we believe we understand it changes on us. Love is the utmost unpredicatable feeling, language, knowlegde to ever be felt by human kind. In the end its not about understanding what you are feeling it is about embracing it and living it out till the end. Words were created by man kind to communicate. What did they use before? Other forms of words, langaue, accent. But body language can never be decieved, that is pure, and the butterflies you feel are real. Go with your instinct and it will fall into place.

The heart is love. It 'sings to her inside'. But language is unable to express that which is greater than reason. Language has been worked out by reasonable process and common consent but cannot encompass that which is beyond reason. The only way is to invent your own language but no one understands it. Florence has an advatage over poets though by using the language of music to express the ecstasy of life.
