Fall Out Boy – Just One Yesterday lyrics
I thought of angels, choking on their halos
Get them
drunk on rose water
See how dirty I can get them pulling out their fragile teeth
And clip their tiny wings

Anything you
say can and will be held against you
So only say my name, it will be held against you
Anything you say can and will be held against you
So only say
my name

If heaven's grief brings hell's rain
Then I'd trade all
my tomorrows for just one yesterday
(I know I'm bad
news) for just one yesterday
(I saved it all for you)
I want to teach you a lesson in the worst kind of way
Still I'd trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday
(I know I'm bad news) for just one yesterday
(I saved it all for you) for just one yesterday

Letting people down is my thing baby
Find yourself a new gig, this town isn't big enough for the two of us
I don't have the right name, or the right looks
But I have twice the heart

Anything you say can and will be held against you
So only say my name, it will be held against you
Anything you say can and will be held against you
So only say my name

If heaven's grief brings hell's rain
Then I'd trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday
(I know I'm bad news) for just one yesterday
(I saved it all for you)
I want to teach you a lesson in the worst kind of way
Still I'd trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday
(I know I'm bad news) for just one yesterday
(I saved it all for you) for just one yesterday

[Foxes]
If I spilled my guts
The world would never look at you the same way
Now I'm here to give you hope my love

So I can watch your face as I take it all away away away-ay-yay

If heaven's grief brings hell's rain
Then I'd trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday
(I know I'm bad news) for just one yesterday
(I saved it all for you)
I want to teach you a lesson in the worst kind of way
Still I'd trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday
(I know I'm bad news) for just one yesterday
(I saved it all for you) for just one yesterday

This is probably based on my own experiences, but I feel a huge connection to the part of this song that Foxes sings.

When I was in my first year of university, I met a guy who asked me out, and I went on one date with him before deciding I wasn't interested. About a year later, he was at a party that I was also at, and he sexually assaulted and raped me that night. The connection I feel to the lyrics I think has to do with my anger at him for doing that to me. "If I spilled my guts, the world would never look at you the same," is pretty straight forward in that if I admitted to the world what he did to me, no one would see him in the same light. "Now I'm here to give you all my love, so I can watch your face as I take it all away," really spoke to me because in all my anger after he raped me, I wanted to do something to him to hurt him the way he hurt (both physically and psychologically) me. I knew he was interested in me after he asked me out the first time, and He saw an opportunity at that party to get what he wanted from me, and he took it. So if giving him "all my love" (as it's phrased in the song) and then taking it all away gave me the opportunity to cause him the same pain and misery he caused me, I would want to have that revenge and see the expression on his face as he realized it was all a lie. Lol, pretty dark, but that's what I always felt in that part of the song in particular. Knowing someone wanted love from you, but hating them enough that your only goal in relation to them is to cause them pain.

As for the rest of the song, in the chorus, I always thought the lyrics were "if heaven's grief brings hell's REIGN" (homophones but different meanings) then I see the grief as the grief I felt after I was raped, his reign as having that power over me to do what he did. And I'd give almost anything to go back to the time before that happened, so "trade all my tomorrow's for just one yesterday" yesterday being the time before I was raped. "I want to teach you a lesson in the worst kind of way," is how I want to teach him a lesson for what he did, teach him how wrong it was, but in the worst kind of way because I want to make him miserable, almost as an act of revenge for all the misery he caused me. "I know I'm bad news, I saved it all for you," is again, my presence being bad news for him because I'm there to get him back for what he did to me, and I saved all of my anger, and "bad news" or bad intentions for him.

The first verse would be in relation to this guy trying to get me as drunk as possible so as to minimize my ability to fight him off. Pulling out the teeth and clipping wings would be what he did to me and how it hurt me, and how it has affected me in the long term. Metaphorically, I can't fly anymore as my wings have been clipped.

On my first listen to the bridge where it's referencing your rights that are read to you when arrested, I only saw the play on words in "Only say my name, it will be held against you" being a flirtation, 'say my name, and I'll be held against you/hold myself against you'. But with my relation to my own experiences of the song, it obviously relates in how he is guilty of this and should be "arrested" (whether literally or metaphorically and only in need for punishment). When it says, "say my name, it will be held against you," it more meant that my name is my identifier, and what he did to me is where he is guilty, and what he did to me is held against him.

Anyway, that's my overall interpretation of the song, largely based on my own experiences and I just realized as I was listening to this song how much the part Foxes sings perfectly captured how I felt about this person who raped me, and then the rest of the song seemed to fall into place.
