[Hook: Rihanna]
I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head
You're trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I'm crazy, yeah, you think I'm crazy

[Verse 1: Eminem]
I wanted the fame, but not the cover of Newsweek
Oh well, guess beggars can't be choosey
Wanted to receive attention for my music
Wanted to be left alone in public excuse me

For wanting my cake, and eat it too, and wanting it both ways
Fame made me a balloon cause my ego inflated
When I blew; see, but it was confusing
Cause all I wanted to do is be the Bruce Lee of loose leaf
Abused ink, used it as a tool when I blew steam
(Ooh!) Hit the lottery, oh wee
But with what I gave up to get was bittersweet
It was like winning a used mink
Ironic cause I think I'm getting so huge I need a shrink
I'm beginning to lose sleep: one sheep, two sheep
Going cuckoo and cooky as Kool Keith
But I'm actually weirder than you think cause I'm...

[Hook: Rihanna]
I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head

You're trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I'm crazy, yeah, you think I'm crazy

[Bridge: Rihanna]
Well, that's nothing

[Verse 2: Eminem]
No, I ain't much of a poet but I know somebody
Once told me to seize the moment and don't squander it
Cause you never know when it all could be over tomorrow
So I keep conjuring, sometimes I wonder
Where these thoughts spawn from
(Yeah, ponder it, do you want this?
No wonder you losing your mind, the way it wanders)
I think you've been wandering off down yonder
And stumbled onto Jeff VanVonderen
Cause I need an interventionist to intervene between me and this monster
And save me from myself and all this conflict
Cause the very thing that I love's killing me and I can't conquer it
My OCD is conking me in the head
Keep knocking, nobody's home, I'm sleepwalking
I'm just relaying what the voice in my head is saying
Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just friends with the...

[Verse 3: Eminem]
Call me crazy, but I have this vision
One day that I walk amongst you a regular civilian

But until then drums get killed
And I'm coming straight at MCs, blood get spilled
And I take it back to the days that I get on a Dre track
Give every kid who got played at, pumped up feeling
And shit to say back to the kids who play 'em
I ain't here to save the fucking children
But if one kid out of a hundred million
Who are going through a struggle feels and then relates, that's great
It's payback, Russell Wilson falling way back in the draft
Turn nothing into something, still can make that, straw into gold chump

I will spin Rumpelstiltskin in a haystack
Maybe I need a straight jacket face facts, I am nuts for real
But I'm okay with that, it's nothing, I'm still friends with the...

I think that this song is about Eminem and Rihanna talking about their internal "monsters". The ones of which they are constantly fighting with and eventually learn to live with them. As the chorus says, "I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed, get along with the voices inside of my head," which alludes to her having problems that she is struggling with internally and emotionally. Also Eminem states in his second verse, "Do you wonder there's no wonder you're losing your mind the way you're brought up?" which references his rough childhood growing up without a father and a drug abusing mother who was not very supportive until he actually got famous and tried to use him for money. Later in the same verse, Eminem has a line that says, "Keep knocking, nobody's home, I'm sleepwalking." This means that his issues are not welcome to bother him anymore, and he believes that the issues he has struggled with are mostly behind him, but some still linger momentarily. In the third verse, Eminem also says, "But if one kid out of a hundred million, who are going through a struggle and relate that's great." Meaning that it's not his point to inspire people, especially children, he still enjoys the feeling of having somebody relate to him, and being able to relate to others. Throughout the song both artists reiterate "crazy" or words that are synonymous, part of the chorus itself saying, "You think I'm crazy." Eminem also has lines such as "Going and cuckier as Kool Keith, but I'm actually weirder than you think." and "Maybe I need a straightjacket, face facts, I am nuts for real, but I'm okay with that." These lines also continue to reiterate the point that both Eminem and Rihanna have made peace with their "monsters", although other may think that they're still insane.

I think it's as simple as it reads. He's just talking about the change fame brings and the ego one gets from all that attention. In their mind they become bigger than life, but after a while they crave the normalcy of the past but can never achieve again. Some find that the work itself is rewarding enough and once accomplished are satisfied with all they gave up to get there, but others reach their goal and find it's not at all what they thought. Yeah, the money is nice, but they become unfulfilled when they realize they traded freedom for it. Both Em and Rihanna have achieved their goals and are where they wanted to be in that industry, but neither are where they want to be in life and are desperately wanting to know....what now?

The song may conveniently portray them having to deal with their inner "monsters" being as their personal problems.. but then, keep in mind that since EMINEM's last album and past songs, Eminem has been talking about being used and wanting to get out of the system (I'm not afraid... look for more if you want)... especially for the most part that Eminem had songs corroborating him with the devil (My Darling, Inner Demons, etc.).

Don't need to say much for Rihanna since she openly admitted she's a devil worshipper.
(too bad she recanted her statement after the public had a different view with her affiliations... ironic for the most part that many musicians affiliate themselves with occultic and satanic emblems and insignias?)

So, yeah... we can say that they were just talking about their inner demons.

But I wonder why so many artists like talking about the devil, the monster, the beast... and they didn't mean them in the allegorical sense of what your inner desires are or your untapped talents...

    About the song...

    > "I'm friends with the monster That's under my bed" - (in reference to our fear of the unknown. As a kid, you wouldn't want to look underneath your bed if you were told that something bad is underneath it. So same goes with the sense that you are afraid of doing something or getting into something that you don't know and aren't sure of, especially with the wrong people... worst yet, the ones that WILL use you. But to "be friends" with it means that the individual has set aside her doubt and fear and attain an "understanding" of this monster)

    But why?

    > "get along with the voices inside of my head" - (conscience vs. desire, the only thing that keeps this society sane as it is, the right from the wrong. "get along" meaning that the individual wasn't willing or didn't want to do anything with the voices [desires or something else] at first but decided to go with it. Desire has won over the individual's sense of conscience, that's why she wanted to be friends with the monster.

    How she sees us...

    > "you're trying to save me, stop holding your breath" - (she's referring to people trying to understand her "trying to save me", as much as any normal person would want to help people with problems: "stop holding your breath" referring to not wanting to get your hopes up or expectation of getting a better understanding of her.

    > "And you think I'm crazy. Yeah, you think I'm crazy" - (referring to people who know her for who she really is or who've tried to understand her. Her "you think I'm crazy" may pertain to her perspective of what the world is to her and how she lives by it... something that we WILL not approve. Something that is unbelievable. Something that breaks the façade of our image of her.

    Her thoughts on that

    > "well, that's not fair. Well, that's not fair" - (her reply to those against her and those for her. She sings what feels but no one understands her. 1st line "well, that's not fair": her fans. She sings what she experiences and does but those that don't approve of her view scrutinize her and all the more persecute her for what they see her for. 2nd line "well, that's not fair": to those that don't appreciate what she's conveying.

Rihanna's songs all stick to the message hidden in plain sight... her choruses. Regardless of the artists that collaborate with her.

Eminem and Rihanna wanted a slice of fame so they signed the devil's contract (referring to big business that will push you to get you to make a profit at the expense of your soul - that being your dignity and right to choice as your every move and thought is laid bare to the public... their gift, your curse)

People want to understand them but people just can't understand them since what they live and do is beyond belief! You'd call them crazy.

So they're saying "shut up, don't think we don't got it tough here in the limelight"

And yes... they were JUST talking about their personal dilemmas and problems... its more than that... you JUST can't fathom it to an extent to the problems we face everyday...

Well, that's not fair... Well, that's not fair.

I think it's acknowledging & 'being friends' with the fact that people will always judge you, be critical of you & try to tear you down or use you (as you did). To be friends with 'the monster', is to accept it. It's the "whatever! You're going to hate me id you want, no matter what!" Being 'friends' is saying I'm going to live my life, accept it & not let your negativity eat me alive. As my momma always says "anything negative is from the devil." Artists are bombarded with it so its no wonder they talk about it. I think it's a positive light hearted message. Make friends with your enemy, life's to short to be in fear of everything & everyone.

I think that it means no matter what you do there will always be people judging you. This song basically speaks to me in a way that it's saying 'that's not fair' when a person is clearly judging you for something you may do that's different from everyone which in some cases is in fact talking to yourself! Now Eminem's music is always using ways to help people get through their lives and when he says "Wanted to be left alone in public excuse me" he is saying how he wants to be left alone and be known by the music that he does but not because he is a rapper! It is also saying that you never know what is going to happen in life in that it is always changing and once you are in the spotlight or in a state of recognition from other people you need to 'seize the moment' as this could be your only chance. Eminem is also saying how even though you may be called crazy it can get to your head and this can hurt someone and is saying how people should treat eachother in a way that's fair where he can walk around without being surrounded and treated like a normal person and not only recognised for his fame :)
