Eminem – The Monster lyrics
[Hook: Rihanna]
I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head
You're trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I'm crazy, yeah, you think I'm crazy

[Verse 1: Eminem]
I wanted the fame, but not the cover of Newsweek
Oh well, guess beggars can't be choosey
Wanted to receive attention for my music
Wanted to be left alone in public excuse me

For wanting my cake, and eat it too, and wanting it both ways
Fame made me a balloon cause my ego inflated
When I blew; see, but it was confusing
Cause all I wanted to do is be the Bruce Lee of loose leaf

Abused ink, used it as a tool when I blew steam
(Ooh!) Hit the lottery, oh wee
But with what I gave up to get was bittersweet
It was like winning a used mink
Ironic cause I think I'm getting so huge I need a shrink
I'm beginning to lose sleep: one sheep, two sheep
Going cuckoo and cooky as Kool Keith
But I'm actually weirder than you think cause I'm...

[Hook: Rihanna]
I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head

You're trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I'm crazy, yeah, you think I'm crazy

[Bridge: Rihanna]
Well, that's nothing

[Verse 2: Eminem]
No, I ain't much of a poet but I know somebody
Once told me to seize the moment and don't squander it
Cause you never know when it all could be over tomorrow
So I keep conjuring, sometimes I wonder
Where these thoughts spawn from
(Yeah, ponder it, do you want this?
No wonder you losing your mind, the way it wanders)
Yodel-odel-ay-hee-hoo
I think you've been wandering off down yonder
And stumbled onto Jeff VanVonderen
Cause I need an interventionist to intervene between me and this monster
And save me from myself and all this conflict

Cause the very thing that I love's killing me and I can't conquer it
My OCD is conking me in the head
Keep knocking, nobody's home, I'm sleepwalking
I'm just relaying what the voice in my head is saying
Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just friends with the...

[Verse 3: Eminem]
Call me crazy, but I have this vision
One day that I walk amongst you a regular civilian

But until then drums get killed
And I'm coming straight at MCs, blood get spilled
And I take it back to the days that I get on a Dre track
Give every kid who got played at, pumped up feeling
And shit to say back to the kids who play 'em
I ain't here to save the fucking children
But if one kid out of a hundred million
Who are going through a struggle feels and then relates, that's great
It's payback, Russell Wilson falling way back in the draft
Turn nothing into something, still can make that, straw into gold chump

I will spin Rumpelstiltskin in a haystack
Maybe I need a straight jacket face facts, I am nuts for real
But I'm okay with that, it's nothing, I'm still friends with the...

I think that this song is about Eminem and Rihanna talking about their internal "monsters". The ones of which they are constantly fighting with and eventually learn to live with them. As the chorus says, "I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed, get along with the voices inside of my head," which alludes to her having problems that she is struggling with internally and emotionally. Also Eminem states in his second verse, "Do you wonder there's no wonder you're losing your mind the way you're brought up?" which references his rough childhood growing up without a father and a drug abusing mother who was not very supportive until he actually got famous and tried to use him for money. Later in the same verse, Eminem has a line that says, "Keep knocking, nobody's home, I'm sleepwalking." This means that his issues are not welcome to bother him anymore, and he believes that the issues he has struggled with are mostly behind him, but some still linger momentarily. In the third verse, Eminem also says, "But if one kid out of a hundred million, who are going through a struggle and relate that's great." Meaning that it's not his point to inspire people, especially children, he still enjoys the feeling of having somebody relate to him, and being able to relate to others. Throughout the song both artists reiterate "crazy" or words that are synonymous, part of the chorus itself saying, "You think I'm crazy." Eminem also has lines such as "Going and cuckier as Kool Keith, but I'm actually weirder than you think." and "Maybe I need a straightjacket, face facts, I am nuts for real, but I'm okay with that." These lines also continue to reiterate the point that both Eminem and Rihanna have made peace with their "monsters", although other may think that they're still insane.

I think it's as simple as it reads. He's just talking about the change fame brings and the ego one gets from all that attention. In their mind they become bigger than life, but after a while they crave the normalcy of the past but can never achieve again. Some find that the work itself is rewarding enough and once accomplished are satisfied with all they gave up to get there, but others reach their goal and find it's not at all what they thought. Yeah, the money is nice, but they become unfulfilled when they realize they traded freedom for it. Both Em and Rihanna have achieved their goals and are where they wanted to be in that industry, but neither are where they want to be in life and are desperately wanting to know. What now?

I think that it means no matter what you do there will always be people judging you. This song basically speaks to me in a way that it's saying 'that's not fair' when a person is clearly judging you for something you may do that's different from everyone which in some cases is in fact talking to yourself! Now Eminem's music is always using ways to help people get through their lives and when he says "Wanted to be left alone in public excuse me" he is saying how he wants to be left alone and be known by the music that he does but not because he is a rapper! It is also saying that you never know what is going to happen in life in that it is always changing and once you are in the spotlight or in a state of recognition from other people you need to 'seize the moment' as this could be your only chance. Eminem is also saying how even though you may be called crazy it can get to your head and this can hurt someone and is saying how people should treat eachother in a way that's fair where he can walk around without being surrounded and treated like a normal person and not only recognised for his fame :)

I think it's acknowledging & 'being friends' with the fact that people will always judge you, be critical of you & try to tear you down or use you (as you did). To be friends with 'the monster', is to accept it. It's the "whatever! You're going to hate me id you want, no matter what!" Being 'friends' is saying I'm going to live my life, accept it & not let your negativity eat me alive. As my momma always says "anything negative is from the devil." Artists are bombarded with it so its no wonder they talk about it. I think it's a positive light hearted message. Make friends with your enemy, life's to short to be in fear of everything & everyone.

This song is about Eminem talking about Slim shady how he wants to end this relationship with Slim but at the same the he is okay with the fact that slim shady is around he loves slim shady but hates him at the same time . I totally relate to this song because I too am friends with my alter ego and I'm okay with that .
Eminem intentions were to actually talk about his experiences with slim shady whether we liked it or not and as for Rihanna I think she also might be hearing voices in her head and she is okay with that

Wtf? All artists in the music industry are satan worshipers? I'm sure there are some Gospel artists that love to hear that. Lol You say you'll just sing from your hymn book and you really think you have not been brain washed? Either you are that ignorant or just a net troll. Either way yeah go sing your hymns and afterwards how about asking your god to forgive you for passing judgement on others without knowing them personally. Trash.

I think they and every artist in the industry is in the Illuminati, a satanic cultist, and I refuse to listen to any more music. I came here to read the lyrics because I know Rihanna is satanic and Eminem is going that way whether he wants to or not. So instead, I'll just sing from my hymn book because the spells they cast on their music is not wanted by me. Have fun being brainwashed into satanism the rest of you. I for one refuse to fall for it!
