Do you feel the thorns?
Do you see the tears?
Do you see the bloodshed in this fell war?
Have you forsaken us?
Have you forgotten our faithful men calling your name?
While I stand before you
While we perish
While I lay down a crimson rose
While holding hands are forced apart
While hopes bog like condemned men
Were you there?
The sky is falling on me
As your hand's turning old and weak
I'm giving myself upon to thee
A futile sacrifice gone sere [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/e/eluveitie/a_rose_for_epona.html ]
In your nemeton
These grey stone walls are cold and silent
As the fallen mother gone deaf
Mistress of shattered hopes
And forever broken dreams
Were you there?
The sky is falling on me
As your hand's turning old and weak
I'm giving myself upon to thee
A futile sacrifice gone sere
Epo, Epo, why has thou forsaken me?
Together we go unsung
Into thy hand I commend my spirit
Together we go down with our people
Were you there?
Were you there?
The sky is falling on me
As your hand's turning old and weak
I'm giving myself upon to thee
A futile sacrifice gone sere

Helvetios is a concept album about a group of gauls, the helvetii, who used to live in areas of present-day france and switzerland(where the band is from). The album is a story told from the perspective of one of the helvetii, and in this song a girl has stopped at a shrine to epona, goddess of horses and fertility, to try to find answers to why the tragedy of the roman invasion has happened, and why they have been so utterly routed by the romans.

This song is about a celtic woman who is dissappointed about the goddess epona, the goddess of the cavallery and fertility because she feels like epona did not support her people in the gaulish war so that they lost and many men had to die. Maybe the woman now fears getting caught by the romans.

Epona was a goddess of horses and fertiltiy. Obvously she failed someone. It seems that they may have called on her in a time of war. Calling on her to give the horses and chariots strength and victory perhaps. Epona was worshiped in rome, and was also considered a celtic goddess. "as the fallen mother gone deaf, mistress of shattered hopes, and foever broken dreams, were you there? " there is such frusteration in this song. Sad.

A prayer to an unanswering goddess, in a time of grief and despair. Seems like sort of a timeless theme.

I hear it as a woman offering up herself as a sacrifice to her god or goddess trying to gain it's attention or favor since it seems to have been ignoring or not helping them in war
