Ed Sheeran – UNI lyrics

I found your hairband on my bedroom floor,
The only evidence that you'd been here before
And I don't get waves of missing you anymore,
They're more like tsunami tides in my eyes
Never getting dry, so I get high, smoke in the days then I sleep with the light on
Weeks pass in the blink of an eye,
And I'm still drunk at the end of the night
I don't drink like everybody else,
I do it to forget things about myself,
Stumble and fall with the head spin I got
My minds with you but my hearts just not

So am I close to you anymore, if it's over
And there's no chance that we'll work it out
That's why you and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied
You and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied

Everybody said we'll be together forever but I know that,
I never wanna settle down, come around, break up the love like lego now,
Never wanna turn into another like you,
Sleep with my thoughts dance with my views,
Everythings great not everything's sure,
But you live in your halls and I live in a tour bus,
Now I'm in position to be another staker like every thing I say makes it all sound awkward,
Like our last kiss it was perfect, but we were nervous,
On the surface,
And I'm always saying everyday that it was worth it,
Pain is only relevent if it still hurts,
I forget like an elephant, or we can use a sedative and go back to the day we fell in love on first kiss

So am I close to you anymore, it's over
And there's no chance that we'll work it out
Oh you and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied
You and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied

Because, if I was gunna go somewhere, I'd be there by now,
And maybe I can let myself down, ohh
And thinking that I'm unaware, I keep my feet on the ground, keep looking around, to make sure I'm not, the only one to feel low,
Because if you want, I'll take you in my arms and keep you sheltered, from all that I've done wrong
And I know you'll say, that I'm the only one
But I know that God made another one of me to love you better than I ever will.

-Chorus-

I am going of to dance school in london and my boyfriend I going to uni elsewhere, we know it will be best to end things on good terms and go our seperate ways but it is going to be so hard when we still have such strong feelings for each other. I know its for the best but I don't want it to happen. This song pretty much sums up how I'm feeling right now.

It cleverly uses the letters you n I to convey 2 different meanings when said in a very slight different way, them obviously being uni (spelling the short terminology for university) and you n I meaning himself and his now ex-girlfriend. The song expresses the problem that uni causes when a couple getting to the ripe age of 18 and may part there separate ways, but in this case 2 very different ways. I guess it was a split that was for the best, as I too agree that 2 people who will very rarely see each other can not maintain a healthy relationship and if trying to carry it on could in fact cause a lot more problems and move the relationship to causing hatred between them, cause at least in latter life they could either get back together or remain good friends. I have really waffled on, apologies!

I think it's about how she chose to go to uni (university) instead of sticking with him as he built his career. "but you live in your halls and i live in a tour bus. " the life of a musician is unstable, unlike what she would have in uni, and they part because they want different things. ".. But i know that i never wanna settle down. "
In the end, both still loved each other. He acts like he's fine with ending it and knows she does too when she actually loves him, "and i know you'll say that i'm the only one" but he genuinely cares enough for her to be happy:
"but i know that god made another one of me to love you better than i ever will"
    Such a sweet song.

Whe you get spilt up because one of you goes away to uni, it is incredibly hard. Both people change, you end up resenting each other. Speaking from experience here! It hurts so much to lose the one you love because you have grown apart while one of you/ or other of you, are studying. I'll always love my ex and I know he's the same with me, but we just couldn't do the distance. We both changed so much. I miss him every day.
