I relate this song to volcano by damien rice,because for me,they have the very same meaning. It's about that time when you fall in love and realise that you're just a phase for the other one,you're the second option,you're the back-up plan. "i will never be your stepping stone" but.. "the less you give , the more i want so foolishly" , here's the part when she underlines the inner fights one can have while dealing with such a situation. Because she is in love with him,but he draws her happiness around a thin line of what may be/might have been.

She would be there when hed call her only to have fun
she realize he was messing with her and she dint want to see him again
because as he said he loved her he also loved someone else&
she knew but dint know how to leave him
so she acted like she dint know much just like his friends
but he knows that she aware that shes not the only one
because she stilll loves him with all her heart

She realises that she is no longer going to be his backup plan when his alone

He would call her when he felt like it
& it was hard not to fall
when he spoke & his lips said i love you she beleived all the way
& she knew that she beleivng him would only make it worse
& he had no heart that he dint care for her feelings
just like the beats of a song he played&
he willl get it done to him when he finds true love

&& shes atanding strong not going to be a stepping stone where they step on her like she dont matter.
