Michael McDonald

You don't know me but I'm your brother
I was raised here in this living hell
You don't know my kind in your world
Fairly soon the time will tell
You...telling me the things you're gonna do for me
I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see

Takin' it to the streets (takin' it to the streets)
Takin' it to the streets (no more need for runnin')
Takin' it to the streets (Oh, oh-oh, nah, nah)

Take this message to my brother
You will find him...everywhere
Wherever people live together
Tied in poverty's despair
Are you...telling me the things you're gonna do for me
I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see

Takin' it to the streets (takin' it to the streets)
Takin' it to the streets (no more need for runnin')
Takin' it to the streets (takin it to the streets)
Takin' it to the (BREAK)

Are you...telling me the things you're gonna do for me (yeah, hah)
I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see

Takin' it to the streets (takin' it to the streets)
Takin' it to the streets (no more need for runnin')
Takin' it to the streets (Ah, yeah)
Takin' it to the streets (takin' it to the streets)
Takin it to the streets (we'll discuss it further)
Takin' it to the streets (Ah, nah)
Takin' it to the streets (takin' it, takin' it)
Takin' it to the streets (hey, yeah, now)
Takin' it to the streets (Takin'...it to the streets)
Takin' it to the streets (no more need for runnin')
Takin' it to the streets (no more need for hidin')
Takin' it to the streets (ah, yeah, yeah)
Takin' it to the streets (no...more)
Takin' it to the streets (yeah, yeah)
Takin' it to the streets (takin' it, takin' it)
Takin' it to the streets (aaaaahhh)
Takin' it to the streets (takin' it, takin')
Takin' it to the streets (no more need)
Takin' it to the streets (takin' it, takin' it)

This is a gospel inspired song, the tale of jesus talking to his people but updated with 1970's lingo. The song idea came from a poem that michael mcdonald sister wrote to him. The lyric refers to mark 16:15 "and then he told them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone". Clever idea, not surprising consider McDonalds fondness for gospel music.

I think it would be jesus' theme song if he came back as a man today. We need to take his message of true godly love as described in 1 corinthians chapter 13 to our brothers (and sisters) not just sit in church and sing how great we are. Jesus took it to the street, to the common people, the people who were "tied in poverty's despair". Jesus said "i am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the father except through me. " he was talking about living his example of god's love for us.
