Disciple – Dear X (You Don't Own Me) lyrics

Dear pain, oh, it's been a long time
Remember when you were holding me tight
I would stay awake with you all night
Dear shame, I was safe in your arms
You were there when it all fell apart
I would get so lost in your beautiful lies
I let you go
But you're still chasing

Go ahead
You're never gonna take me
You can bend
But you're never gonna break me
I was yours
I'm not yours anymore
Oh, you don't own me

Dear hate, I know you're not far
You would wait at the door of my heart
I was amazed at the passion in your cries
Dear anger, you made me so high
You were faithful to show up on time
Such a flame that was burning in your eyes
I let you go
But you're still chasing

Go ahead
You're never gonna take me
You can bend
But you're never gonna break me
I was yours
But I'm not yours anymore
Oh, you don't own me

Go ahead
Put a target on my forehead
You can fire
But you've got no bullet
I was yours
But I'm not yours anymore
Oh, you don't own me

You tempted me to look back
But everything that we had together was a lie

Go ahead
You're never gonna take me
You can bend
But you're never gonna break me
I was yours
But I'm not yours anymore
Oh, you don't own me

Go ahead
Put a target on my forehead
You can fire
But you've got no bullet
I was yours
But I'm not yours anymore
Oh, you don't own me

Go ahead
Put a target on my forehead
You can fire
But you've got no bullet
I was yours
But I'm not yours anymore
Oh, you don't own me

Believe the song is about all those dirty little secrets we all have. The sins we're ashamed of that keep cycling back through our minds like a rewound tape playing over and over. What we left at the cross we keep picking up and that includes the angers we've held so dearly and have let go of time and time again. But it doesn't have to be, jesus said "it is finished" and we don't have to give into that torment ever again even thogh the enemy of our souls would love us to believe he has us targeted. But he's got no bullet!

I recently found out my husband has been cheating on me for the last three years. It has been a huge blow for me and my 3 children. The court allow my children to stay with my husband and his girlfriend and it is a killer. My husband is the anger, hate, pain and shame and I was his but I'm not anymore. I can now live in truth and let god rain victor or this.

I can really relate to this song on so many levels. Even though I am saved and born again I still struggle with hate, anger, pain and especially shame. My life has been so full of all of these. What this song says to me is that I no longer belong to these things and even when I am under attack by these emotions and even give in to them, they no longer have the power to break me. I can turn from them and walk away. I have a choice. I can stand up to them no matter what they try to destroy me with. I once belonged to these emotions and they once ruled my life but they do not control me anymore and I need not fear them. "he that is in me is stronger than he that is in the world" 1 john 4: 4.

I realized that my life compared to others isn't so bad through this song. I realized that when satan tries to harm us, we are to turn around and get farther away from him. But when he comes back after us, we are to turn around and tell him, 'satan, you don't own me! I was yours, but I'm not anymore, so leave me alone, because you can't control me, my life, my actions, anymore! ' god has created others in your life as tests, because he knows that without them, you wont have a clue what to do when you come in contact with the real thing.
