Driving through the desert I met a man
Who told me of his crazy plan
He'd been walking there for 20 days
He was gonna walk on for 20 more
I said, “How ‘bout a drink or a bite to eatâ€
He said, “No, my faith is all I needâ€
So then, save me, save me
Mister walking man, if you can
You don't need to prove a thing to me
Just give me faith make me believe
C'mon save me, save me
Mister walking man, if you can
C'mon save me, save me
I said, “Stranger if you pleaseâ€
Save me, save me
Stranger if you please
Or am I too far gone?
I said, “to get back homeâ€
How ‘bout you take a ride with me
We could kill some time, shoot the breeze
He said, “every whispering wind and second countsâ€
Oh, maybe if you walk but you should drive around [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/d/dave_matthews_band/save_me.html ]
Save me, save me
Mister walking man, if you can
C'mon save me, save me
I said, “stranger, if you pleaseâ€
Save me, save me
Stranger, if you please
Or am I too far gone?
To get back home
I don't need you to stop the sunshine, no
I don't need you to turn water into wine, no
I don't need you to, to fly
I'm just asking you to save me
(You might try savin' yourself)
I'm gonna save me
(You might try savin' yourself)
I swear those lips shine
(You might try savin' yourself)
As it, the, the moon it shines
(You might try savin' yourself)
Why don't you, save me
(You might try savin' yourself)
Come on and save me
(You might try savin' yourself)
Oh, oh, oh, oh
(You might try savin' yourself)
Why don't ya save me
(You might try savin' yourself)
Why don't ya save me
Save me, save me
This song is clearly about jesus's run in with the despicable devil in the desert. Jesus speaks clearly and beautifully while the devil questions whether or not jesus can save him or anybody for that matter. Since jesus doesn't save those who don't really desire to be saved (the devil was just trying to tempt jesus, he didn't love christ, the devil is proud and hates god who is his enemy). You see in order for the devil to succeed, which he didn't, he would have had to weakend christ's faith in himself to save the world, which he did. Christ finished the task and the devil failed. Since the devil knew he was a failure, he tried to make it as bad as possible on jesus hence the gruesome beatings (to say the least). The whole song is from the devil's perspective and through his lips. Not that dave is the devil, but he has a keen understanding of the devil's ways to try and weaken faith, and will use little ways of rhetoric and 'statements' to lessen faith in a mighty god who's ways are unseen by the lost. Jesus was not lost and was strong, so strong that he bore the weight of all the sin in the world. It is a catchy song that riles up our emotions, but don't be drawn to it as a song of worship but rather a reflection. It is a fact that christ saves, but we must understand why and how to fully appreciate the need he satisfies - the hole in our soul that he fills. God bless you in your walk.
