How the time passed away
All the trouble that we gave
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste?
All the promises we made
One by one they vanished just the same

All the things I still remember
Summers never looked the same
Years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain
In the middle of September
We still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

Now it all seems so clear
There's nothing left to fear
So we made our way by finding what was real
Now the days are so long
That summer's moving on
we reach for something that's already gone
Yeah

All the things I still remember
Summers never looked the same
Years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain
In the middle of September
We still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

Yeah we knew we had to leave this town
But we never knew when, and we never knew how
We would end up being the way we are
Yeah we knew we had to leave this town
But we never knew when, and we never knew how
Never knew anything

All the things I still remember
Summers never looked the same
Years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain
In the middle of September
We still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

Hey, yeah, yeah

I think it is about reminiscing, how time has flew and how everyone has grown up. Looking back at the times they had when they were so much younger, with big dreams, promises and making mistakes and getting into trouble. Saying that they wouldn't have done it any differently even if they had the chance to go back in time because all of it was worth it in the end.

Where you do not cherish anything and take everything for granted and wanted to grow up and leave. And now you want it back so bad, but you can't anymore, and you'd do absolutely anything to touch and be in those times again.

I think it is about memories, about our chilhood, when we were just innocent, when we didn't have to worry, everything was so easy. And now, all we have it's just our memories because now it's difficult, it's different.

In my opinion, this song is about how friendships don't last. New things appear like family, work, and new friends. You lose your old friends, and you have many memories of the past with them. You might be sad, but you can look back at those memories, and say that it was definitely worth it, being this guys friend.
