Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.

I love my love and well she knows,
I love the ground, whereon she goes,
I wish the day, it soon would come,
When she & I could be as one.

Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.

I go to the Clyde and I mourn and weep,
And satisfied, I never can be,
And the I write her a letter, just a few short lines,
And suffer death, a thousand times.

(Guitar)

Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.

Hey, seems to me like a man, whom the woman he loves either dies or refused him her hand in marriage ! So sadly he gets stuck in a moment he can't get out of, he can't accept this, so he goes to the clyde to take matters into his own hands , but before he does he writes her the note.?

Suicide is not as the song says "painless" loved ones are surely in agony for the rest of they're lives.! . . . So don't even consider it as an option. . . The moment will pass, and a brighter day will come.. . . Joey

    The woman has died
he never got the chance to tell her of his love for her
he waits and wishes for the day where he can be reunited with the one he loves to finally get the chance to tell her and for them both to be as one
the song is reminiscing on her beauty and his regret

She is in a dead relationship, he agrees to wait til its buried. But its not easy, waiting. The ground is where she stands apart from him whenever they are in public. If she could be with him, she surely would. X

She is married to another. They can never be as one. He writes his feelings down, then gives them to the clyde. She knows how he feels, and likes that. She has him, no need to leave her security. She has her lover in check.

It means that this guy has friend, and he loves her, just he isn't with her and he wishes to be with her.
