Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue,
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame.
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand,
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years ran away.
Yesterday when I was young
So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung,
So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see.
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about,
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me, me, and nothing else at all.
Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do,
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond.
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died.
The friends I made all seemed, somehow, to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play.
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung,
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue.
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday
When I was young... young... young

He was never able to commit to true love and fulfillment because he was always chasing the next big kick. But once youth ran out, he realized that he had built his life on quicksand. No meaningful sustained relationships. Alone and lonely, he realizes he cannot reap the benefits of the true friendships and loves which he didn't sow when he was too busy living fast, running out on girlfriends and causing them the pain he didn't hang around to see. Tears of self pity.

It's quiet simply a commentary on life, exquisitely written. It says what it says. The writer effectively wakes up someday and it's all gone, the high life is gone, now at middle age life takes on a different perspective and he is now the victim of nostalgia reflecting on the "glory years". Anyone who let go and lived their younger years throwing caution to the wind will identify closely with this song. This song will have no real meaning to a young person, if a young person got this song I would feel sorry for them and tell them get out there and live the carefree life because soon the chance will pass.

Don't waste any time. Whatever you want to do- do it now and don't let anyone stop you. Life can turn on a dime. This song sums it all up. Life is precious and it goes by way too fast. From ages 0 to 40 it feels like its forever, but after ... Whoosh!
