Carol Banawa – Panunumpa lyrics

Ikaw lamang ang pangakong mahalin
Sa sumpang sa'yo magpakailan pa man
Yakapin mon'g bawat sandali,

Pangakong walang hanggan

Ikaw lamang ang pangakong susundin
Sa takbo sakdal, liwanagan ang daan
Yakapin mong bawat sandali,

'Pagkat taglay lakas mong angkin

Pangakong walang hanggan

At mapapawi ang takot sa 'kin
Pagkat taglay lakas mong angkin

This song is more than a promise. "panunumpa" is a vow. The first stanza is about the vow of chastity. Loving with an undivided heart (ikaw lamang. Mamahalin). The second one is the vow of obedience (susundin). The third is faithfulness (katapatan). Then the last one is eternal (magpakailan). The repeated line "mapapawi ang takot" means something because of this love "my fears are all gone."

Panunumpa is a filipino word for "promise". Literally, we refer a promise as a sworn oral or written statement we obliged to do for the benefit or good of another person/s. In this song, however, panunumpa or promise means something that is eternal and a word beyond its meaning. It signifies life, love and hope. The term somehow varies its meaning as what the lines said. But in general, a promise is not a legal word but naturally binds two different people of different cultures and different languages. The song is commonly sung in many celebrations more especially during weddings (but this will be just an option). As the title or word suggest, this song is solemn and more on emotions.
