Burt Bacharach – A House Is Not A Home lyrics
A chair is still a chair
Even when there's no one sitting there
But a chair is not a house
And a house is not a home
When there's no one there to hold you tight,
And no one there you can kiss good night.

A room is still a room
Even when there's nothing there but gloom;
But a room is not a house,
And a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart.

Now and then I call your name
And suddenly your face appears
But it's just a crazy game
When it ends it ends in tears.

Darling, have a heart,
Don't let one mistake keep us apart.
I'm not meant to live alone. turn this house into a home.
When I climb the stair and turn the key,
Oh, please be there still in love with me.

The key for the entire song is "not allow one mistake". In our world that usually means infidelity, and most people cannot forgive their spouse/mate from having an affair with another person. We may forgive, but we never forget that, and history shows if a person does it once, they will do it again. It's a sad thing that people need immediate gratification without evaluating the long term effect on a relationship.

The song has a simple and eternal message. Sometimes you don't know what you have until it's gone. So often people are "right-fighters. " they argue over minutia and avoid the real issues that are like the elephant in the middle of the living room. These arguments seem so important to the one who has won the argument; but being right can result in a very lonely victory, when the one you love isn't there to give you a hug or a kiss goodnight. A house is only bricks and morter when the one you love has gone away in anger or has died. Loving and being loved makes a house a home; makes everything right and good.

A house is a structure but it does not make it a home. People can live inside that structure but if they are disconnected, it will never become a home. Dionne Warwick's version of this song, I would play often as a young girl. Why, because I lived in a house with my parents. All three of us were disconnected from sharing the love we had with one another after my older sister died at the age of 7 years. I was five and we as a family never got back on track. I did not want material things. I wanted love and understanding. So, I grew up in a house not a home.

I spent my life trying to make my house a home. Then I lost the love of my life, my soul mate. I realized a home is more than brick, stick and mortar. It is the people who live there. Then, last year I lost my son, Eric, who loved life and his family, especially the family get togethers. Now I realize that people make the home. My house will never be the same. Will it ever be a home?

The song goes much deeper that failing to understand the husband or wife want their love to return. When the song mentions one mistake, that usually means infidelity, and that is one of the most difficult one to overcome There is usually a reason for infidelity, and the reason must be addressed.

I love this song, its music, its lyrics turn me into tears every time I hear it! The music is seductive, like a mesmerizing attraction and the lyrics break my heart with a deep punch that goes up to my throat and can't help crying! This song has a such a meaning that encompasses all life's rituals of living, wanting, desiring - and let it go! Sad and sweet but it leaves you pensive pondering about why we live like in Alfie's song. Seductive and yet so spiritual.
