De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto voy para Mayarí
(Repeat x3)

El cariño que te tengo
No te lo puedo negar
Se me sale la babita
Yo no lo puedo evitar

Cuando Juanita y Chan Chan
En el mar cernían arena
Como sacudía el 'jibe'
A Chan Chan le daba pena

Limpia el camino de pajas
Que yo me quiero sentar
En aquel tronco que veo
Y así no puedo llegar

De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto voy para Mayarí
(Repeat x3)

(Instrumental solo)

De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto voy para Mayarí
(Repeat x2)

De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto voy (slowly) para Mayarí

From alto cedro, i head for marcane.
I get to cueto, i head for mayari

    My tenderness towards you
    I just can't stop
    You make my mouth water
    I just can't help it

    Juanica and chan chan
    Sifted sand by the sea.
    When she shook the sieve,
    Chan chan got hard,

"clear the leaves off the path.
    I want to lie down
    On that tree-trunk i see.
    Like this, i can't get there. "

From alto cedro, i head for marcane.
I get to cueto, i head for mayari

The opening and closing lines -- De Alto Cedro. . .voy para Mayari -- frame the central story. The music is lively but solemn. The story is important. I think the singer is an old man going from town to town -- ? a postman ? -- now sitting down at a cafe to tell a story to the men around him.

The story (like all stories) is a memory. But here it is a memory of long ago -- of the singer's youth -- probably of his childhood. It may be a memory of his first sexual experience. But my own take is that the memory is of his first awareness of sex -- even before puberty. The girl and the boy are playing in the sand -- meaning, I think, that they were playing like children -- building sand castles and so on. The boy notices how attractive the girl is when she wiggles her behind -- and he gets an embarrassing hard-on. He wants to sit together with the girl away from the beach -- on a tree next to the path. I think he just means to sit there. He has no experience with actual fucking and probably doesn't want to go there or doesn't know how to. His feelings for the girl are overwhelming to the little boy.

The memory is charming. It is filled with remembered lust -- but lust that was somehow innocent and good and youthful. What a charming girl Juanica was! How naive Chan Chan was! Now she is long gone -- dead or very old -- but she is always a girl in the old man's memory and he is always a boy. The memory is tender and has been a comfort to him as he has traveled through life, from here to there to there -- stopping just now to rest and refresh himself.

Really, it is a most beautiful song.

When you hear the trumpet and the guitar solo in this song every meaning is meaningless... It frees my mind... There is never just one meaning. There is just the intepretation of each person for every song, situation, anything in life. My interpretation of chan chan is that with love we can do everything. Don't let anyone take your soul and the love from your heart.

The affection i have for you
    i can't deny
    it makes my mouth water
    i can't help it

    When juanica and chan chan
    sifted sand by the sea
the way she shook her jib
    gave chan chan pain

    Clear the path of straws
i want to go sit on that log
like this, i can't get there.

Juanica's "jibe" is clearly her forward structure, like the jib sail on a boat or the jib on a crane.

Poor chan chan can't climb over the straws on the path because he is very stiff.

The lyric is very simple and naughty. I can't see any indication that we should be looking for something more complex.

    Rodrigo
