De Alto Cedro voy para Marcane
Llego a Cueto voy para Mayari
(Repeat x3)
El cariño que te tengo
Yo no lo puedo negar
Se me sale la babita
Yo no lo puedo evitar
Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
En el mar cernian arena
Como sacudia el 'jibe'
A Chan Chan le daba pena [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/b/buena_vista_social_club/chan_chan.html ]
Limpia el camino de pajas
Que yo me quiero sentar
En aquel tronco que veo
Y asi no puedo llegar
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcane
Llego a Cueto voy para Mayari
(Repeat x3)
(Instrumental solo)
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcane
Llego a Cueto voy para Mayari
(Repeat x2)
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcane
Llego a Cueto voy (slowly) para Mayari
The opening and closing lines -- de alto cedro. . . Voy para mayari -- frame the central story. The music is lively but solemn. The story is important. I think the singer is an old man going from town to town -- ? A postman ? -- now sitting down at a cafe to tell a story to the men around him.
The story (like all stories) is a memory. But here it is a memory of long ago -- of the singer's youth -- probably of his childhood. It may be a memory of his first sexual experience. But my own take is that the memory is of his first awareness of sex -- even before puberty. The girl and the boy are playing in the sand -- meaning, i think, that they were playing like children -- building sand castles and so on. The boy notices how attractive the girl is when she wiggles her behind -- and he gets an embarrassing hard-on. He wants to sit together with the girl away from the beach -- on a tree next to the path. I think he just means to sit there. He has no experience with actual fucking and probably doesn't want to go there or doesn't know how to. His feelings for the girl are overwhelming to the little boy.
The memory is charming. It is filled with remembered lust -- but lust that was somehow innocent and good and youthful. What a charming girl juanica was! How naive chan chan was! Now she is long gone -- dead or very old -- but she is always a girl in the old man's memory and he is always a boy. The memory is tender and has been a comfort to him as he has traveled through life, from here to there to there -- stopping just now to rest and refresh himself.
Limpia el camino de pajas - clear the pathway
que yo me quiero sentar - because i want to sit
en aquel tronco que veo - atop that tree trunk i see
y asi no puedo llegar - and like this (with his pants on) i'll never arrive (i.e. 'come')
Very sensual tune. Its the story of two lover at a beach. Longing, passion, and its telos.
