I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all
?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this
?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settles around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all
?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this
?
If you close your eyes

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins
?

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Wow! A song that is not about "love", drugs, money, alcohol, cars, and/or girls. This is the first popular song in awhile that does not fall under these categories. This is a unique "historical" type of song, a type of song you never hear on the radio. We all need to hear more of this, this is a great song!

In my opinion, this song is about the actual city of Pompeii, being destroyed by Mount Vesuvius, during the volcanic eruption. This person is trying to get rid of that though of their home being lost, and trying to recover it, yet I also find that it may have a hidden meaning. It's possible that it may be talking about a ruined relationship, or you losing something valuable (i. E. A home, family member, belonging).

From the actual artist himself this takes place from two of the victims, the ones purified for eternity in the ash, and their arguing over how they got their to begin with. I think that the One is trying to argue that the gods gave us this punishment because of all the vices that happened here, and that we must think of a change our ways to avoid it from happen again. The other one, the other hand, is more concentrated on the rebuilding of their city, saying that behind all the rubble, ash, and smoke is indeed their home. These two fighting for an eternity because they were victims in this natural disaster, while the only real people that can change anything were the survivors. This is a song that makes you wonder what would you do in this situation. Would you rebuild what was left of the life you knew? Or would you try to understand the faults that got you there in the first place. I love this song now because of the meaning, something most pop songs do not have these days.

I think that this video is bad and the city of Pompeii and other cities that affect the mount Vesuvius. I would ask that why their eyes were getting bigger? Cause I'm very concern of it. It's questioning me. So terrible. I felt so bad for this city and this video gonna make me cry because of the video and that happened of Pompeii. And not pompeii was only affected by the mount vesivius, herculaneum, oplontis, stabiae, and nuceria. So sad. I felt bad. I was worried in this cities. Hope God will help you always. I was worried.

I found that this song has many levels and varying meanings. Not only is it the blatantly obvious Pompeii meaning but also an ever changing world and coping with it. The sky going into darkness could also be the feeling of growing up and losing innocence within himself or someone or something else. This can as well be predicated on the refrain. Which could be interpreted as rejection of the enviable change or a figurative eruption of some sort.
