Barry Manilow – Copacabana lyrics

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star
Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 til 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?

Chorus:

At the copa (Co!) Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)
At the copa (Co!) Copacabana
Music and passion were always in fashion
At the copa.... They fell in love

His name was Rico
He wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far
Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?

Repeat chorus

At the copa... She lost her love

Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl,
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola,
Still in dress she used to wear,
Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind

Repeat chorus

At the copa... Don't fall in love
Don't fall in love

I would not have normally posted, but the other user was a bit off in the song meaning.
Yes it is a song about a girl and a guy who were young and in love. They both worked at a club. This was a dancing club I would assume in Miami, because of the reference that is was north of Havana. (Not in Havana) actually the copacabana was a hot night spot in the 30' 40's and 50's. Anyway her lover "Tony" saw her being hit on by another guy "Rico" Tony came over and Rico and Tony got into a fight, Then there was a gunshot. In the last verse Lola was at the club many years later (30 to be exact) and she was in her old dancing outfit. You could assume that "Tony" was the one who was shot and he died, because of the line that Lola lost her love. Byt on the reverse Tony could have shot Rico and recivied a life sentence in jail. Either way it ends lola still is alone with out her Tony.

This song is about a girl who lost her love at a bar because a man called her over and went to far and the girls man fought with the other man and then he probably thought she wanted to do stuff with him so he dumped her so now she is depressed 30 years after everything had happened and now she drinks her self till she is drunk and she wears the old clothes she used to dance in at the club in havana.
