It's five o'clock
And I walk through the empty streets
Thoughts fill my head
But then still
No one speaks to me
My mind takes me back
To the years that have passed me by
[interlude]
It is so hard te believe
That it's me
That I see
In the window pane
It it so hard to believe
That all this the way
That it has to be
It's five o'clock
And I walk through the empty streets
The night is my friend
And in him
I find sympathy thus so
And so I go back to the years that have past me by
[interlude]
It is so hard to believe
That it's me
That I see
In the window pane
It it so hard to believe
That all this the way
That it has to be
It's five o'clock
And I walk through the empty streets
The night is my friend
And in him I find sympathy
He gives me day
Gives me hope
And a little dream too [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/aphrodites_child/its_five_oclock.html ]

This song to me, is a song about loneliness, and regret. Walking down the street alone thinking about your life, realizing you have little or no friends left to share these thoughts with, and in a desperate attempt to salvage some kind of happiness you get nostalgic. But as we all know, this nostalgia only lasts so long and leads to that moment of twilight (his 5 o'clock) when your life is coming to an end.
He repeats the time (5 o'clock) because the emphasis is on time. He's almost looking forward to the sun going down and the night consuming him so that he can embrace it and maybe find comfort. Maybe he'll have another chance tomorrow, maybe not. -andre jantz
