Andrew Lloyd Webber – Music Of The Night lyrics
Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness wakes and stirs imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write...
For I compose the music of the night

Slowly, gently, Night unfurls it's Splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Hearing is believing, music is deceiving
Hard as lightening, soft as candlelight.
Dare you trust the music of the night?

Close your Eyes -
For your eyes will only tell the truth
And the truth isn't what you want to see
In the dark it is easy to pretend
That the truth is what it ought to be.

Softly, deftly music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness that you
know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night

Close your eyes -
Start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes -
And let music set you free.
Only then can you belong to me

Floating, falling, Sweet Intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each Sensation
Let the dream begin, Let your darker side give in
To the Power of the music that I write,
The Power of the Music of the Night
!

******

You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night.

I think he is referring to the fact that, in the dark, you can use your other senses to discover, feel and think things. If christine closed her eyes, and didn't care what he looked like, he's hoping that somehow, she would love him. He longs for a feeling of acceptance, and he wants to know if its possible to love him if she ignores his looks, because from his life, he knows no one would accept him otherwise. He seems to be saying that everything looks more beautiful when you can't see it, and wants christine to join him in the dark, live with him and accept him, and make his songs 'take flight'.

This is about making love in every way, physically, emotionally, spiritually and of acceptance of someone's challenges. Savor each sensation is surely referring to all the feelings of love. Trusting in his ability to convey love in all ways. The Phantom is begging for the opportunity to show Christine that he is able to satisfy her every need and dreams if she just gives him a chance. Listening to Andrea Bocelli sign this song stirs up so many sensations in me, it makes me want the Phantom. It's beautiful how music can do that. Truly magical.

This song is less about making love and more about making music. He wants christine because she is beautiful and has a beautiful voice- he tells her "i am the voice, you are the face". He knows in the darkness (night) they can make music together and there no one will judge him for his disfigurement, he doesn't want christine to judge him by his looks either. Such a sad story, poor phantom! ; _;.

And may I remind the unregistered user who said the music is lulling and "it's as if the lyrics are straight from Satan himself" that it is Jesus who said that nothing that comes into you from the outside defiles you. He said it is what comes out of you from the inside that defiles you.

And as for the user who said, "it's like the lyrics are straight from Satan himself," yes, the music itself is lulling, but it's not impossible to maintain your common sense as you listen to this song and enjoy it. I've done it many times. The instrumental refrain towards the end reminds me of the final song "Down Once More/Track Down This Murderer" because the same instrumental refrain plays at the end of that song after the Phantom has sung his final lines. Those final lines are "You alone can make my song take flight. It's over now the Music of the Night!" Those lines clearly tell us that the Phantom is abandoning his evil music after Christine has shown him unconditional love and he has let her go. He realizes that what he has done throughout the musical is evil and he regrets his actions. In the first verse of "Down Once More," the Phantom describes his home in the catacombs in a less than rosy and appealing manner.

"Down once more to the dungeon of my black despair
Down we plunge to the prison of my mind
Down that path into darkness deep as hell
Why you ask, was I bound and chained in this cold and dismal place?

    Hounded out by everyone
    Met with hatred everywhere
    No kind word from anyone
    No compassion anywhere"

This is the complete opposite of how the Phantom describes his dark world in "The Music of the Night." He described his dark world as appealing and beautiful in "The Music of the Night" because he wanted Christine to stay willingly.

OK, has the second to last unregistered commenter seen this musical or the 2004 movie? I'm a Christian, too, but the black and white thinking becomes silly if you know this song in the context of the musical. Pay close attention to the last two lines. He wants Christine's love because he thinks that will make him complete. The song is not Satanic if you take into account that the Phantom wants to love and be loved.

Scary. 'Let your darker side give in', let your guard down, music is deceiving (absolutely!) 'you will belong to me'? It's like the lyrics are straight from Satan himself. Make of it what you want, but to me, this is all about letting your guard down, to 'not think', and 'just feel' and 'give in' and leave your brain and common sense behind. NO. Not good at all. The music itself is very...lulling, drawing, tempting, hypnotizing... like getting drunk, or high, or brainwashed. Nope. Not going there. I will never hear this song in the same way now that I've read the lyrics. They have helped me understand the point of the music itself.
