Aladdin – One Jump Ahead lyrics

[Aladdin:]
Gotta keep
One jump ahead of the breadline
One swing ahead of the sword
I steal only what I can't afford
(That's Everything!)

One jump ahead of the lawmen
That's all, and that's no joke
These guys don't appreciate I'm broke

[Crowd:] Riffraff! Street rat! Soundrel! Take that!

[Aladdin:] Just a little snack, guys
[Crowd:] Rip him open, take it back, guys
[Aladdin:] I can take a hint, gotta face the facts
You're my only friend, Abu!
[Crowd:] Who?
Oh, It's sad Aladdin hit the bottom
He's become a one-man rise in crime
I'd blame parents except he hasn't got 'em
[Aladdin:] Gotta eat to live, gotta steal to eat
Tell you all about it when I got the time!

One jump ahead of the slowpokes
One skip ahead of my doom
Next time gonna use a nom de plume
One jump ahead of the hitman
One hit ahead of the flock
I think I'll take a stroll around the block

[Crowd:]
Stop, thief! Vandal! Outrage! Scandal!

[Aladdin:] Let's not be too hasty
[Lady:] Still I think he's rather tasty
[Aladdin:] Gotta eat to live, gotta steal to eat
Otherwise we'd get along
[Crowd:] Wrong!

[Aladdin:] One jump ahead of the hoofbeats
(Vandal!)
One hop ahead of the hump
(Street rat!)
One trick ahead of disaster
(Scoundrel!)
They're quick, but I'm much faster
(Take that!)
Here goes, better throw my hand in
Wish me happy landin'
All I gotta do is jump

When I was younger, I used to take the keychains off of my classmates backpacks while they were walking to the buses. We uses to never have books in my house that I could read, so I would take them from the classroom and return them without the teacher, students, or my parents finding out. Throughout the years realised I am very sly and have the skills to be a thief. I'm never going to be one, I just know I could if I wanted. I returned them all, but I was never caught. I was always one step ahead of everyone when it came to me stealing. Hearing this song after 5 years of not seeing the moving or hearing the songs reminded me of that. It sent me on a trip down memory lane and I was overwhelmed by how much it brought back to me. Now I question what would have happened if I would have continued to steal from kids in my grade. During my mom's drunk states, she neglected me and made me feel like I didn't have a parent. Stealing somehow reminded me that I was good a something. I didn't do it to be bad. I did it to remind my self I can do something. This song, for whatever reason, makes me remember to tell myself I can do anything, and not to beat myself up. I never told the kids my real name until I was older, so I went by the alias "Link." (Nom de plume). I feel like I relate to this song so much it's inhumane. This song is forever a part of my life.
