Against Me! – White People For Peace lyrics

East and West could not agree
So their generals gave a call and gathered troops at the border
With guns ready, drawn and aimed
Each side was praying to a God
To bless them with strength and courage
It was in His name that artillery lit the sky on fire
The people sang protest songs to try and stop the soldier's gun

Protest Songs in a response to Military Aggression
Protest songs to try and stop the soldier's gun
But the battle raged on......

Sirens filled the air and the ground shook with war
Civilian casualties has been a cost that was predetermined
When interviewed for report victims pleaded in frustration
Their claim: That this was a war without reason
Bureaucrats engaged in debate to try and reach a resolution
The people sang protest songs to try and stop the soldier's gun

Protest Songs in a response to Military Aggression
Protest songs to try and stop the soldier's gun
But the battle raged on......

The Broadcast like their prayers went unanswered and ignored
God, like the rest of the world, just watched in silence
There was purpose to be served, there were fortunes to be earned
Before a peace could be called to stop the fighting

Protest Songs in a response to Military Aggression
Protest songs to try and stop the soldier's gun
But the battle raged on......

My first thought about the lyrics of this song was that it was written in response to a war that had to have been very recent in American History. It makes sense that they are talking about the war in Afghanistan. This was in response to the twin towers falling at the hands of the radical Islamic group known as Al Qaeda; led by Osama bin Laden. I could come to this conclusion by looking at some of the choice words the artists use. First, I noticed that it had to do with this war when he said, “Their claim: That this war was without reason,” and, “Protests songs to try and stop the soldier’s gun, But the battle raged on.” From research, I know that many people believed that going to war with Afghanistan was unnecessary and they voiced their opinions about it and about George Bush’s decision to go to war. From the lyrics, you can also tell that the artists are also against the war overseas. You can tell that he is antiwar when he talks about how the prayers of people went unanswered and that all the politicians would do was debate on the war instead of finding ways to stop the war in the middle east.

That songs and demonstrations without action are ineffectual against a foreign policy and government who's only concerns are lucrative companies who prosper from war (many of whom have shares in said companies). And yet, people still die in the name of 'freedom'. The people need to realise that it is them who control the government and not the other way around. "if there is hope, it lies in the proles".
