I've walked down high streets looking through windows.
I've been lost in crowds of strangers.
Searched record shops and cosmetic aisles, phone books, want ads, bus stops and libraries.
Newspaper headlines, mannequin faces, television stations, billboard advertisements.
Your voice echoes in the back of my mind.
I see your face when I close my eyes.
Do you share the same sense of defeat?
Have you realized all the things you'll never be?
Ideals turn to resentment, open minds close up with cynicism.
I've got no judgement for you.
Come on and ache with me. [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/against_me/ache_with_me.html ]
Through bar rooms, cafés, jail cells and court rooms.
Theaters, restaurants, graveyards and churches.
I've spent every dollar that I've ever earned.
I'll bleed my heart out, I'll give every word.
I've asked preachers, doctors and lawyers, socialites, pariahs, mothers and fathers.
You may not find all that you're after, in the end I hope it doesn't matter.
Do you share the same sense of defeat?
Have you realized all the things you'll never be?
Ideals turn to resentment, open minds close up with cynicism.
I've got no judgement for you.
Come on and ache with me.
Do you share the same sense of defeat?
Have you realized all the things you'll never be?
I've got no judgement for you.
Come on and ache with me.

I must admit i didn't know about against me before today, but i know what laura as she now prefers to be called is talking about. As someone who is transgender i can relate to this song very heavily and i would bet that it is describing the pain of gender dysphoria. Regardless of what it is about though it is a great song, and something that anyone who has been through hard times can relate to.

One of the more touching songs i've ever heard. Regardless of who its addressed to the chorus embodies a universal truth any aging anarchist/rebel knows all too well. If you don't get it now, if 7you still haven't felt that pain, you will in the future ... Deliberating all those unrealized futures & failed revolutions... Very nietzschean & heartfelt song. 2 thumbs up just for the lyrics

I neglected to mention that the singer obviously has gone through a crushing breakup with his "love", and his heart is searching for her, not wanting to let her go. It's quite possible that his girl left him because (in her eyes) he did not have the "drive" that she was looking for in a man. The singer is looking for others who have gone through the same experience as him. I love this song. I hope that it will become a time tested classic. It is an absolutely beautiful piece of art.

My interpretation of this song seems to be something coming from someone going through a "midlife crisis" but looking for others who are in the same boat. There seems to be a message of "it's okay that you didn't become uber-rich or uber-famous" because in the end, it just doesn't matter. Lucky is the person who truly achieves his or her dreams to the fullest. But dreams are beautiful and motivating, and it would be a miserable life not to have any dreams in front of you.
