5 Seconds Of Summer – Broken Home lyrics

[Verse 1: Luke]
They would yell, they would scream, they were fighting it out
She would hope, she would pray, she was waiting it out
Holding onto a dream
While she watches these walls fall down

Sharp words like knives, they were cutting her down
Shattered glass like the past, it’s a memory now

Holding onto a dream
While she watches these walls fall down

[Chorus: Calum]
Hey mom, hey dad
When did this end?
Where did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home

Who’s right, who’s wrong
Who really cares?
The fault, the blame, the pain’s still there

I'm here alone inside of this broken home, this broken home

[Verse 2: Calum]
Wrote it down on the walls, she was screaming it out
Made it clear, she’s still here, are you listening now
?
Just a ghost in the halls
Feeling empty, they’re vacant now

All the battles, all the wars, all the times that you’ve fought
She’s a scar, she’s the bruises, she’s the pain that you brought

There was life, there was love
Like a light and it’s fading out

[Chorus: All]
Hey mom, hey dad
When did this end?
When did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home
Who’s right, who’s wrong
Who really cares?
The fault, the blame, the pain’s still there
I'm here alone inside of this broken home, this broken home

[Bridge: Michael]
You've gotta let it go, you’re losing all your hope
Nothing left to hold, locked out in the cold

Your painted memories that washed out all the seas
I'm stuck in between a nightmare and lost dreams

[Chorus: Michael & All & Calum]
Hey mum, hey dad
When did this end?
When did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home

[Chorus: All]

Hey mum, hey dad
When did this end?
When did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home
Who’s right, who’s wrong
Who really cares?
The fault, the blame, the pain’s still there
I'm here alone inside of this broken home
This broken home

I believe that this song is about a girl with obviously a broken home, but it shows the emotional aspect. After knowing many people in this situation and being very close with them, I can verify that this is how they feel. I've even experienced the fighting and it's a terrible thing and I'm so happy that someone so famous could bring an issue like this to attention and explain that the emotional effect is not just heavy on the parents but is also very heavy on the children. It also shows some of the main question that most children and teenagers would ask in this kind of situation. I've loved 5 Seconds Of Summer ever since I heard she looks so perfect, but after this song I have grown a deep respect for them. I feel that it gives the ones who are too scared to speak up and explain what's going on in their home life, a voice. I will recommend this song to my friends in this situation, because I feel it will touch them and other people for that matter and really make them feel what it's like to be in that situation. I believe the message is very strong and will really hit home with most people.

It all started normally. Life was beautiful. The puzzle piece was finally falling into place - mom and dad were happy, and all of the void was suddenly filled.
But just as fast as it seemed to come together, it fell apart. You don't feel safe in your home anymore. The walls are shooting in, screams flow from the hallway and into your ears. Your stomach turns; maybe it will stop? But it doesn't. The two people in your life who were infinitely in love are now your deepest, darkest secrets. You want it to go back to what it used to be, but it keeps worsening. They're fighting over the dumbest of things again. Who gives a damn about who wins the argument?
It's mentally damaging. The smallest spark of light that remained in your life was blown out. You scream, you pray, you hope.
    It doesn't work.
Remembering the good times is gut wrenching. Forgetting it all would be the easiest, but every memory seems to haunt your soul form the inside out. You want to let it go already.
I love this song because of how personal it is, especially to Ashton. I believe that while we all know this song is vastly important to him, he maybe just couldn't sing it. His father had neglected him and his mother at a young age. However, while he seems as if he brushes it off of his shoulder, it must still occasionally haunt him. There is always that "what if?" factor. What if he stayed? What if I was too much of a bothersome child? What if I could've stopped it all? A lot of the lyrics and emotions in this song probably derive from how he felt at a young age. Ashton has mentioned on few occasions that because of his father's abandonment, he was left very sad at times. He and his mother were very low on money, and he would constantly find himself moving from place to place. Hungry. Tired. Feeling as if he was always a bother to those around him. His mind was most likely a sea of woolly blackness during a large part of his life. Divorce is not unusual nowadays; 50% of marriages end in divorce. You're not alone. Ever. It may feel dark and scary right now, but you'll make it out stronger than ever before.

Basically this song is about how this person's parents are constantly fighting. And how she's there in the background listening to the horrible words said and wishing it would end so maybe they could be a happy go lucky average family. For me this song expresses how I feel when my parents fought/ still fight. They divorced about a year and half ago. When I first heard this song (and looked at the tracklist), I knew this song was going to express my feelings really well and it was giong to my be one of my favorites. It was going to be relatable too. My parents still fight(on the phone), and I listen to this to block them and listen to it on repeat really connect to the lyrics. When I just listen to it, I always ask myself when it ended and get everything out.
